GLM 3 for "64 bit only" mac OS 10.15 "Catalina" – when will it be ready?
Youngling Posts: 10 Join Date: 3/8/12 Recent PostsGLM 4 Beta is now available at link: https://www.community.genelec.com/web/guest/forum/-/message_boards/message/1550642
Hi,
as I updated the OS, a few apps stopped working, but all with a backup plan already (Aperture, Photoshop etc.).
But I dont see any announcement from Genelec as if there wont be any update on mac OS in September/October.
What is your plan on the development of GLM for Mac?
Cheers!

Youngling Posts: 10 Join Date: 3/8/12 Recent PostsThanks for making this "sticky"!
I updated to Catalina (Beta) on a spare Mac, but it will be only a matter of 3 to 4 month until the new OS will be released (Oct most likely).
As it doesn’t allow 32bit apps, even the latest GLM 3.1 won’t run anymore as the base seems to be a code derived from the native windows version. It looks and feels like a Java App.
So I also would be happy to be included in the early adopter programme for your 64 bit release. If you decide to re-build the app with Apple's Swift that would be very good news as well! 65MB for Win but 250MB for Mac installer feels like a second choice ;-/
All the best,

Youngling Posts: 0 Join Date: 6/30/19 Recent PostsIt's incredible, I bought the model 8351A, and my operating system was SIERRA 10.12.13, impossible to install GLM (any version /error)
GLM 3.1.1 says , Made for "MOJAVE", although I didn't like to parsar 64bits, because I lost a few plugins and applications, I did it to install GLM, and .....
Same! ERROR, ERROR, ERROR when installing....
I'm thinking about returning these monitors.... that I bought mainly for the properties that GLM promises....
Unbelievable! ;/

Youngling Posts: 10 Join Date: 3/8/12 Recent PostsDear swartz,
even though I am a Genelec user only – I can tell you my experience:
1. GLM 3 always worked (unlike GLM 2), until Catalina. So under Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, no problems.
2. As I am a web developer and using Safari as everyday browser, I can tell you Safari is getting worse and worse. So it might be Safari having the issues. I registered years ago, but can use Safari with this forum. Maybe its an ad blocker or just bare Safari. There are more and more websites I have to access through Firefox, cause Safari has issues.. so it is always good to have a second or third browser on hand.
All the best!

Padawan Posts: 74 Join Date: 2/26/14 Recent PostsYear after year you struggle with the major OS X update. When Mojave was released one year ago, Apple announced, that Catalina will be 64bit only. You had one year to prepare and Catalina betas have been out for a couple of months. Still, weeks after the release of Catalina you "are looking for alternatives to translate GML"? You should have started one year ago and you should have been testing the new version during the beta-phase in summer.
I really like Genelec monitors, however, your software support on OS X is ridiculous.

The 10.15 update has not come as a surprise. It was announced early enough by Apple. I paid a whole lot of money for my couple of 8340's, the 7350 and the GLM kit. I expect your IT department to have an eye on your update schedules in a way that we users don't have such a time gap.
That is inacceptable.

RE: GLM 3 for "64 bit only" mac OS 10.15 "Catalina" – when will it be ready
Youngling Posts: 0 Join Date: 7/24/19 Recent PostsGenerally speaking (so not only the audiovisual industry), just jumping on the latest major release instantly (with many unknown issues) of anything is a bad idea. Problems always occur with updates with any piece of software. But in production environments you want stability. The vendor should always let you know when it is safe to update (which Genelec seem to have failed many times in the past). (That is also why you would like to have a test/acceptance environment as well, or an easy way to revert back to a latest stable state. But this is expensive, or it is not always possible to create an exact copy of the production env for testing purposes.)
On the other side, finding this acceptable is another question. Genelec surely knew that operating systems will only be able to support 64 bit apps in the future years ago. They should have already had a beta version.

Youngling Posts: 5 Join Date: 11/16/19 Recent PostsAre we being Trolled by you Genelec?
Apple’s first 64bit OS was 8 years ago and 32-bit apps have been deprecated for a good while now.
This has nothing to do with Catalina directly, but rather Genelec not prioritizing the move to 64-bit. The whole “don’t upgrade your OS” doesn’t work if you buy a new computer which will not run anything but. Apple releases previews very early and has made clear their intentions here for a long time. The only retort is “it wasn’t important to us.” Cool; you’re entitled to that.
The first Mac with a 64-bit CPU shipped in 2006. So let’s stop pretending this is anything other than the result of GLM not being profitable enough to prioritize development on OSX. Kind of scary, as it screams Genelec genuinely doesn’t think of the Mac platform as a priority. That’s totally their decision and that’s fine. It will however, inform my own.

Jedi Master Posts: 449 Join Date: 3/30/17 Recent PostsDear All,
We deeply apologize for the inconvenience regarding GLM – Catalina, and we are also sorry that we have not released much information of the upcoming updates earlier.
One of our Company values is Honesty, and therefore we are always honest towards our customers.
We admit that we have not reacted fast enough to offer a GLM 64-bit application. The main reason for this, but not an excuse, is that we have been using coding tool that does not support 64-bit functionality at the moment, and we have been waiting for the supplier to release an update to their current software tool which would allow us to translate the current 32-bit GLM to 64-bit, which in the best scenario would have been a quite easy and fast job to do for our Software team.
We have been waiting for this release from the coding tool company, and we have had many discussions with them regarding this. However after the latest discussion with them, unfortunately we got the bad news that the release from them will be delayed, and this has led to the unfortunate situation where we have to look for another coding tool. What does this mean for Genelec?
- We need to start using a new coding tool, which means we can use some of the previous coding, but we have to build the user interface from a scratch. As this is a big change to the software, unfortunately this does not happen overnight.
- GLM software is being updated to be compatible with Mac OS X Catalina (10.15). The work is progressing well. Initially, the software becomes available as a Beta for end-customer evaluation. We will let you know as soon as it becomes available.
- GLM cannot be installed on MacOs Catalina. However, GLM works properly on MacOs versions older than Catalina.
- GLM can be installed on Windows with no problem. For those Mac users who have also a PC this can be a temporary solution before GLM 64-bit for MacOS Catalina is ready.
If you would like to participate in the Beta testing program, please send e-mail to address below, and fill your contact information, and type ”I would like to participate in GLM 64-bit Beta testing ”, and we will send you an e-mail with the download link for the new GLM 64-bit for MacOS Catalina as soon as possible.

Thank you for your honest and open response. I appreciate your willingness to share and it goes a long way to help fix/alleviate my personal concerns. We can't always make the right technology decisions, especially in multi-platform development on small teams.
It was absolutely the "not our fault, Apple's fault" that concerned me, so the change in position helps. We all make mistakes. Thank you.

Apple announced over a year ago that they don´t support any 32bit apps anymore so you need more than 1,5 years for a release of an 64bit app? Cmon thats not the quality i expect from a product in such a price area.
Im really disappointed Genelec...

I don't think that's generally helpful here. Most of us sharing our concerns likely use an OSX production environment and GLM is more than just a configuration utility, it doubles as a monitoring controller (in some cases may be the exclusive controller) allow us to dim/remove the sub, switch between profiles, etc.)
While your solution might work if all you used GLM for was configuration, that's not the case for many.

On the more constructive side, i don't want to reboot but i am willing to use a virtual machine. Can we run a small windows in a virtualbox, attach the genelec controller to it and at least we have a poor man solution for the next months.
Genelec can you provide such a virtual machine? and a good explanation on how to do it? virtual box is free to use and a windows license is cheap so we could have a legal solution for cheap.

Hi Jani,
Parallels 15 is also working as VM on Mac with GLM3.exe - technically - if you deplug the GLM-Adapter from USB than replug it, than start Parallels, than the DAW. Additionally VMs are resource consuming, therefore system overloads using DAWs or Video-editing SW increase unfortunately.
I cross my fingers for January (for Q1/2020 and not March) at least as a beta release.
Best regards

And in the middle of this rosy world I stumble on this thread where I learn that you're simply not ready at all for 64 Bit on Mac OS !!??
Can you imagine the number of studios of all sizes using your wonderful speakers who are getting equipped with Mac Pros in the coming weeks ??
This is very poor planning on Genelec's side !!
I will send the email to get on the beta test and I will try your workaround, but this just doesn't do justice to the quality of your products... by a long stretch.

RE: GLM 3 for "64 bit only" mac OS 10.15 "Catalina" – when will it be ready
Youngling Posts: 10 Join Date: 3/8/12 Recent PostsAs I started this thread.. dear fellow younglings,
I accepted Genelec as a reliable yet slow company, I would still prefer over all the other market contenders like KEF or Neumann, with their decisions to fail at quality control or customer support.
I got my SAMs with the switch from GLM 2.0 to 3.0 beta which was as rough as from the bloated 32 bit Java hybrid app Genelec decided to stay with – to a native 64 bit one now, but...
At least I can say what is not very common anymore: the hardware is rock solid and never failed me once, with 3 systems running. The software obviously seems to have not been put a lot of attention to and is not at par. My hope would be to have an equal standard in software quality as I know the Finnish also have the brains in software dev too.
Let's hope Genelec wakes up to this task as well and sees software as an equally important part of their value chain and sales argument and not as it was treated until now.
It is true, the first Core2Duo appeared in 2006, the first 64 bit cocoa apps were possible around that time too. For years this was foreseeable.
It is also sadly true that iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 are comparitively buggy! So as big studios would go: Mojave is the most stable release and if there is any chance, I would not upgrade to Catalina on my productive systems as long as possible.

Fellow old timers,
Yep, Genelec are reliable as all get out. This would not change my next purchase decision. Genelec. It doesn’t mean we should let the company off in an effort to express our frustration at their decisions here.
Comparing them to Neumann is a bit disingenuous though as Neumann acquired Klein & Hummel - those were pretty rock solid as offerings.
However once again we fail to note that new Apple computer models cannot have previous OSes installed in many cases. 16” MBP and the new Mac Pro are two such examples. Arguing about the bugginess (and it’s real, I agree) is a straw man argument, when, over time, users increasingly do not have a choice and Genelec had ample time to prepare.

Why do I have to use a Windows WM for months to calibrate my Ones? Probably most setups don't change that often but I'm working in a flexible studio and have to move my speakers - and rely on calibration very often!
Sadly anyone getting the new MBP 16" cannot use their expensive Genelec speakers... there is no way to use any OS prior to Catalina (And I really would!)
I love G products but this is hard to ignore for future purchase decisions.

Youngling Posts: 8 Join Date: 12/20/19 Recent PostsWe have to wonder what will will be the marketing cost of such a nonsense ?
I would be curious what the marketing team thinks about all this, right in the middle of the release of brand new killer monitors who all heavily rely upon GLM software... a software absolutely necessary to make the best of top of the line expensive speakers... a software that was nonetheless left in 32 Bit on Mac OS when it was clear for the whole world that Catalina was the end of 32Bit... and that brand new top of the line MACs wouldn't run on anything else than Catalina !!! Comes very close to pi...g on everybody's parade, including your own, if I may say !
Let's hope the beta version is only a few days off !!

Padawan Posts: 73 Join Date: 10/26/15 Recent PostsUpgrading the OS before a compatible GLM release was out and bickering about ridiculous data costs for a pointless OS downgrade; Stop, please, I'm sorry but all this does is paint yourself in bad light. SAM systems are no small investment, anyone with these implying they absolutely have no access to an alternate, GLM-compatible platform is a bit funny.
It's just a small delay - yes, small. No professional will jump to a bleeding edge OS release early on, certainly not one which drops 32-bit support. Even the most experimental ones should jump on the brakes when launching critical software on the preceding OS explicitly warns about the issue. Systems don't become unusable because GLM software doesn't run on one computer either, the hardware works fine without it and if you do need the software bits in the mean time, just get another platform to run it on, be it virtual or physical.
The situation is known, there are many workarounds, now there's a set date as well. Could we now please cool this thread down so that announcements are easier to follow, because quite many are interested in them. Thank you.

I'm sorry to inform, the latest information I have received from our R&D is that the release for Beta-version will be delayed from the previous estimation, and at this point we do not have any time estimation share. We will update this thread, as soon as we can share more information. You can find the latest information below:
GLM software is being updated to be compatible with Mac OS X Catalina (10.15). The work is progressing well. Initially, the software becomes available as a Beta for end-customer evaluation. We will let you know as soon as it becomes available.
This thread will be locked as there is many threads regarding this already. To continue discussion and share feedback, please go to this thread: https://community.genelec.com/forum/-/message_boards/message/1499130#/
