8040A - Annoying Noise Floor / White Noise

Dear people of Genelec,

I purchased my first pair of Genelecs 8040A in March 2013 (fabrication Nov 2012)

I have worked with them in a busy city for years but since a few weeks I moved to a very quiet place and I noticed something annoying.

There is a substantial amount of white noise coming out of the speakers.

Now just to be clear:

- the noise is coming out equally from BOTH speakers
- the noise is coming out even when nothing is plugged into the speakers
- the noise is coming out when plugged on different power sockets
- there is no significant difference when I plug them into my mixing table
- they only moved once, in their original boxes and have always been taken care of
- they are placed at a reasonable distance (1m / 1m20) from listening position

The noise is definitely ear fatiguing after just an hour and I believe this should not be happening on speakers with such high standards and such high prices.

Is there any way to attenuate the noise?
I've never heard that on other professional loudspeakers, or other Genelecs for that matter.
Is it a common problem with these models?

I thank you and hope we can find a solution to this problem.

Dear Louis,

Thanks for your question. 8040A self generated noise level is specified at <10 dB(A) at 1 meter distance. That should not be audible not to mention fatiguing even in a very quiet room.

Could you try to record the noise so that I could evaluate its spectrum for possible cause? Please use a good quality microphone to record it for example at 0.5 meter distance. Please start the recording with the monitors turned off so that I can also see the background noise level. Please have the input cables disconnected.

Thank you!

Hello,

thanks for the fast answer.
I am very aware about the <10 dB(A) at 1 meter distance.
This is definitely more noise than normal.

I made 3 recordings with different distances:
- 0.1m
- 0.5m
- 1m

For recording I used an Audio Technica AT2035 condenser microphone and an apogee sound card for the pre amp.
In each recording I switch the speaker on and off, starting with the speaker off.

Keep in mind that both speakers generate the same noise.

Here's the link for the recordings: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/spkuhtcan38q0rl/AABS9egOpTHXoiMDQjODeGkVa?dl=0

Let me know if you need anything else. Your help is appreciated.

Hi Louis,

It looks like the noise level is not normal and your monitors will require service.

Could I ask you to file an official service enquiry form: http://www.genelec.com/service-enquiry-form

You can for example link this thread there for additional information. I see that you are located in France so the service will be handled by our distributor there.

Hello,

Just filled the form :)

Thanks for understanding.

I need to ask, how long would the repair take?
I'm working everyday with these monitors and without them it's going to be very tricky...

Is is possible to have replacement for the time of the repair?
Also, since they are still under warranty, is everything covered by Genelec? (post, etc)

Thanks
