8320 decreased bass after calibration

Youngling Viestejä: 11 Liittymispäivä: 11.7.2018 Viimeisimmät viestit

Hello! I now have a new bundle set of 8320 speakers with GLM. They are connected to RME aio PCI-express soundcard with a balanced audio out using XLR-cables. The card is also isolated from the computer chassis. I have tested this setup now for a few days and it seems to be working well.

After calibration in GLM 3.0 software, I am noticing the base frequencies decreasing alot. Pre-calibration the base is punchier and there are more low frequencies to be heard. Could I do something to improve my room acoustics so that calibration would not correct base frequencies so heavily?

Also a question about setting the volume properly while listening to music throught TIDAL desktop client. I set the volume inside the TIDAL client to max. Do I now set Windows volume to max and then use GLM to set speaker volume so I get my desired volume level? Or do I leave Windows volume to about 50 and then raise speaker volume? Does this matter at all?

With best regards, harri

PS: Thanks to genelec staff for great audio products!

Hi harri,

Can you post an image of your GLM calibration (frequency response before and after calibration)?

If you treat your room GLM will correct to the same target curve. GLM will probably do not need to correct that much.

Probabaly you are simply used to an exaggerated bass?

Just listen a couple of days with the GLM calibration and see if you get used to this linear bass.

If not, you can change the sound balance by using the sound character profiler option in the GLM software.

Thanks for reply,

Is this the information you wanted? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Bp65tWZHkLT02_klwFwMCx27gdlK9Wsv/view

I have noticed that sound after calibration is more pleasant and easier to listen.

With best regards, harri

Yes that is what I was looking for.

You can see that without GLM correction you have a 10dB bass boost (red curve) which is very much reduced by the GLM software (green curve).

Additionally you have a quite pronounced dip with your right speaker around 80-100 Hz this can also lead to the impression of lacking bass. This dip is due to cancellation of this frequency due to room geometry and are not compensated by the GLM software. You can try to vary position of the speakers in your room which might reduces this hole.

Thanks. I have tried different positions with improvement. Best situation is with symmetrical placement with absorbers in primary reflection spots on side walls. Too bad this kind of setup takes up the whole room so it's not leaving very much space for living :(  But I am working on a compromise.

Maybe some one could explain why there is no audio unless I open GLM software? The speakers get activated from sleepmode but no audio is coming through. At the moment I open GLM software the audio starts.
