8300 vs 8000 for home digital music

I want to replace my current “hifi” system with a pair a genelec. I listen to music stored on a mac 90% of the time and spin a record once in a while. The 8300 serie has digital input, does that mean that I don’t need a DAC and can plug my mac straight in the GLM box and the Genelec system will do all the digital processing? Or do I still need a DAC between my mac and the 8300? (I don’t want the cheap soundcard on the mac to do the processing) If the GLM network takes care of the digital processing, is it possible to have my digital music plugged in the GLM input and have my turntable plugged in the analog input, through a preamp, at the same time? (I won’t be playing music from both at the same time...)
If I still need a DAC with the 8300, should I just go with the 8000?

You could connect the turntable to analog input of the genelecs, but it'd be a nuisance to switch betweeen inputs.
better way
find a soundcard to output AES from your mac. hook up a small turntable preamp to the soundcard analog input.
GLM + Volume remote & you're done.
or even better:
forget 8300 or 8000 series, get used 1037, 1038 or new 1237, 1238.
in a big room with listening distance >2.5m main monitors totally obliterate nearfields. like 5x the fun.
1237 is best value in the current genelec lineup. 4200.- a piece, might sound much but is nothing compared to what they can do.

Thanks for the tips, but;
are there any soundcard or other solutions to connect a mac to the genelec AES input that is not over 1000$ ? I read all the threads on this forum on the best ways to go from a computer to AES, and they are all pretty expensive. 1000$ for a "converter" vs 3000$ for a pair of 8340 doesn't seem right.
I would really like to be able to afford a pair of 1X37 or 1X38, but my wallet is not that deep and my room is only 7 by 9 feet ;)
would it be a waste to use the 8340 through the analog input via a "hifi" preamp? I'd rather put my money on a preamp that as DAC capability and a remote than on a "converter" and still no real volume control. I don't mind GLM + volume control for music, but for TV, movies and video games, a remote is a big plus.
if anybody from genelec is reading this: Linn uses RJ45 cables for their active speakers system. would be nice if that GLM box would do more than just the initial setup and wired remote...

Jedi Master Viestejä: 296 Liittymispäivä: 22.4.2010 Viimeisimmät viestiti found a card "Yellowtec PUC2" that's cheaper and has all you need.
alternatively you can go from spdif to AES if the cable is short. not officially, but should totally work.
if it doesn't, add an impedance converter from 75 to 110 Ohm.
spdif is commonplace on cheap soundcards, like 200$ focusrite.
if you're in the US, forget the 1237, too expensive over there.
i don't see what you'd need a preamp for.
there's a wireless remote from genelec, 9101AM

Youngling Viestejä: 6 Liittymispäivä: 25.7.2018 Viimeisimmät viestitThe main reason I would like a preamp or something that does the same job, is that i have 3 differerent sources. Digital music from a mac, a turntable and a PS4 (movies,TV & video games). I want it to be easy to switch between sources and have a remote for volume. I could live without a remote for the music part, but the movie/tv part requires it. Too much variation in volume these days... (I need 1 toslink or USB plus 2 RCA)
At first, I tought you could plug a computer straight into the GLM box and get music. But it s a touch more “complicated” than that. For now, if I want to stay in budget, a preamp, with xlr out, seems the best bet. Please note that a PUC2 is just short of 1000$ here (canada).
Thanks again for your suggestions, it’s really appreciated.

Jedi Master Viestejä: 296 Liittymispäivä: 22.4.2010 Viimeisimmät viestityou don't have to switch between sources, they can all be on at the same time.
you can match volumes in the soundcard once, you won't have to come back and change it.
the computer has to be always on though.
a mac is not ideal for this task, you'll always have clutter with it.
a preamp is a 1000$ soruce switch, that does not smell of the future either.
i recommend you get a htpc tailored to your specific needs in the long run.
