Could GLM compensate HF loss?

Padawan Viestejä: 46 Liittymispäivä: 11.9.2018 Viimeisimmät viestit

Hi guys I plan to install stewart perforated screen for my HT, as you know perf screen would attenuate HF sound by about 0-8dB (from 4k Hz to 20k Hz), and I am going to put LCR(1237/1238) behind the perf screen, so I am wondering would GLM be able to conpensate this HF loss to a perfect condition?

I know GLM could attenuate a peak, but not sure about a null. At least from my experience with GLM on LF, it just cant handle a null. So what about HF?

Thanks!

Sure, you can compensate the HF loss with a HF filter in GLM for each speaker by double clicking on a speaker in a made group or layup.

You should calibrate first though and if GLM doesnt automatically add some +dbs to the HF filter then you can allways adjust it by ear.

Thanks man!

And I may finally have a chance to demo the 1237:)

but try them in front of the screen too.

i'm not certrain of it, but i think that a perforated screen will mess up directivity.

there's a guy called "1038" on this forum who should know.

hey, are you ever in china? this setup for sale might be down your alley:

Yes I think "1038" uses perf screen, read a lot of comments by him.

I am still considering a smaller screen with 8260/8351 as LCR; or bigger perf screen with 1237/1238 as LCR. Those would also affect my choice of projectors. A smaller screen combination could potentially save me 20K US dollar.

You can read chinese? those gears are huge, overkill for my room...

nah, my mandarin is pretty lousy. google translate.

never thought i'd hear you use the term overkill ;)

also got a stewart screen. non perf, 3m wide (not diag). amazing screen.

our rooms are the same width, i guess 3m should be your pick too.

a sony or JVC projector for like 6 grand will light this up, no problem.

orderd screen and new projector at the same time. turned out i only really needed the screen.

it sucks that your ceiling is so low.

did you says you were gonna audition the 1237s? that should settle your debate.

you can have them horizontal too. you can mount them low and have them firing upwards.

you will not want to have the speakers  left and right from the screen.

that's too close to the wall, bass couplung will be awful. i've tried, failed.

attached, a mock-up of what I ended up doing.

to make your life even harder:

black curtains, preferably velvet for light absorbtion will be a must.

bat cave or nuthin' for projection. those new projectors have crazy low blacks.

Cool dude!

Thanks for suggestion, kind of forget the LF sidewall coupling issue, need to rethink!

Yes 3m wide screen would be perfect if using sony vw260es, this combination would save a lot money, because I can use non perf screen.

However if use bigger screen like I previously planned 3.6m*1.9m, then I have to use a perf screen and bigger projectors like vw760es.

Still can't decide, because I want better immersive effects and the bigger the screen, the better the immersion.

And yes I would make the theatre a blackhole, surely:)

hmm, not sure if bigger screen would work.

my room is 4,3 x 5,8m

i've got the sofa at the rear wall. same distance from screen as you i guess.

i feel that i'm currently maxing out my field of vision.

do you have any projector lying around to try sizes on the white wall?

projector in the 1800 lumen range will do. blowing 14 grand on a projector seems silly, i'd rather spend 4 to 6 and upgrade sooner.

I also felt that 4k instead of 2 isn't that important, blacks are, color depth is. i haven't engaged 4k on my PJ in a year because it gets a bit louder.

beware of the sony LEDs, i checked them out last generation and it was awful. or was that the epson? not sure now.

but it was 8 large and the picture was cold and technical.

then i got the JVC and it was awful out of the box. took me a day to find and disable every freaking picture enhancment until it was watchable.

i guess i wish somebody made projectors with a genelec attitude.

My room is 6.3m long 2.6m high maybe 4.2-5.2m wide, the wide is what I can change, just build the wall accordingly, I think to not make it a square room and not make the wide = 2*height, I need the wide less than 5.2m, acoustic wise actually 4.2m is perfect. However to accommodate the screen I can make it wider.
I agree spend too much on a projector is silly. I would rather buy more Genelecs, because those genelecs are so sturdy & keep their value very well. So I'm struggling on the screen size decision:D

I would sit 2m from back wall, 4.3m from front wall, screen would be 0.9m from front wall, so my distance to screen would be 3.4m, so a 3.6m wide screen is ok for me. compare to 3m wide screen what would the experience differentiate, I don't know. I would see some screen size demo next week.

By sony LEDs do you mean their OLED display? I saw the sony 65" OLED, it is amazing, so sharp, so much contrast, just too small.

cool, run your tests.

i'm sure you'll find that you'll want a much smaller screen at that distance.

you and your neck don't want a first row movie theater experience.

with LED i was referring to LED a.k.a laser projector.

the one i saw was crap, but i remember now that that was the epson.

OLED TVs are great of course, but like you said too small for us.

i have it!

I can buy a fixed frame 3m*1.55m and make it on wheels, so I can change my distance to the screen!

First answer seems reasonable, I literally took a laser ruler to the biggest Dolby Atmos theatre in Asia, my result is 16.7m to a 22m wide screen is the best for me. Which is a 66 degree field of view.

Sony laser projectors like vw760es & vw5000es are good, however could not compare to OLED display, huge difference.
