I'm a long time user of traditional 2-way Genelec products at various studios, and I find myself with the opportunity to kit out one of my personal spaces with some new monitors. I've had my eye on "The Ones" for a while and am currently testing a set of 8331s. However, unfortunately it's the only model I am able to locally demo at this time, and I have some questions about the line that I am unable to answer on my own. Because of this, I figured I should post here regarding the differences between the 31/41/51's, primarily from a build quality / material standpoint, and ask for clarification on a few things.
1] Are there any differences in the materials used between the three models? Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that for the 31s it appears that the tweeter is aluminium, the mids are polypropylene, and the woofers are some sort of paper/pulp composite. Are the same materials used on all three "Ones", or does this change on the more expensive models? I know there are substantial internal design differences, and that the 51s have a different surface enclosure for the mids, but are there any shared material differences between them not readily visible from photos?
2] The oval woofers on the 31s appear to not have any sort of dust cap, and the surface doesn't appear to be treated in any way. Are they more susceptible to dust/moisture than the traditional two-way models, and require extra care, or are they in fact treated and fine to use in a typical environment without worrying?
3] The oval woofers also appear to have several "silver scratches" throughout the entirety of the surface. I originally thought these were pieces of debris/fuzz and tried to gently remove them with air, but they are clearly embedded into the material. Is this normal, and just a part of the composite used, or is this a sign of a defect?
4] There also appears to be a rather significant amount of adhesive around the center of each oval woofer that has bled out onto the surface. I can't imagine that a large amount of extra glue on the surface is intentional and normal QC, but considering that all four woofers I inspected have a similar surface bleed, perhaps it is?
I have more questions, but I figured that I'd stop before I start rambling on too much. Thanks in advance for any help/info you can provide, and take care.
