Thank you for all the years of Community discussions and activity!

The time has come for us to retire the community forums, but we will keep everything available for reading. There is a lot of valuable content written over the years, and you'll be able to access all of that. However, no new posts can be written, or old posts modified.

If you have questions, we recommend you use the Support function on the bottom right corner to contact our Customer Support directly.

Alternatively, if you wish to engage in a community discussion with other people, there are many active forums available. There is also an active, fan managed GENELEC COMMUNITY in Facebook, and many Genelec employees are active in the discussions there.

We are sorry for any possible inconvenience this may cause you, but we hope to hear from you through the other channels mentioned above.

Material and QC questions for The Ones

Youngling Viestejä: 0 Liittymispäivä: 16.1.2019 Viimeisimmät viestit

I'm a long time user of traditional 2-way Genelec products at various studios, and I find myself with the opportunity to kit out one of my personal spaces with some new monitors.  I've had my eye on "The Ones" for a while and am currently testing a set of 8331s.  However, unfortunately it's the only model I am able to locally demo at this time, and I have some questions about the line that I am unable to answer on my own.  Because of this, I figured I should post here regarding the differences between the 31/41/51's, primarily from a build quality / material standpoint, and ask for clarification on a few things.

1] Are there any differences in the materials used between the three models?  Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that for the 31s it appears that the tweeter is aluminium, the mids are polypropylene, and the woofers are some sort of paper/pulp composite.  Are the same materials used on all three "Ones", or does this change on the more expensive models?  I know there are substantial internal design differences, and that the 51s have a different surface enclosure for the mids, but are there any shared material differences between them not readily visible from photos?

2] The oval woofers on the 31s appear to not have any sort of dust cap, and the surface doesn't appear to be treated in any way.  Are they more susceptible to dust/moisture than the traditional two-way models, and require extra care, or are they in fact treated and fine to use in a typical environment without worrying?

3] The oval woofers also appear to have several "silver scratches" throughout the entirety of the surface.  I originally thought these were pieces of debris/fuzz and tried to gently remove them with air, but they are clearly embedded into the material.  Is this normal, and just a part of the composite used, or is this a sign of a defect?

4] There also appears to be a rather significant amount of adhesive around the center of each oval woofer that has bled out onto the surface.  I can't imagine that a large amount of extra glue on the surface is intentional and normal QC, but considering that all four woofers I inspected have a similar surface bleed, perhaps it is?

I have more questions, but I figured that I'd stop before I start rambling on too much.  Thanks in advance for any help/info you can provide, and take care.

Hello,

Thank you for your questions, and I'm sorry for late reply.

Could you be kind and send your enquiry to support(at)genelec.com, and include few photos of the 8331A woofers if possible, and it is easier to say if they look normal, or would there be any possible issues. We will also get back to you regarding your other questions then by e-mail.

Best Regards,
Jani Oksanen

I think differences are not particularly clearly listed anywhere, but The Ones in their current incarnation are actually two different generations: 8351 is the first, and 8331/8341 are the second generation products. Despite the general shared looks, more or less everything has changed between these generations in a way or another.

If my memory serves me, material of oval woofers was changed on the second generation (from Kevlar to more traditional paper variant?) and the cone of the mids was reversed (hard surface outwards, foamy stuff inwards). I don't think it's about "price", it's about learning how to improve the product.

Essentially all components have got a redesign between these generations. All amplifiers are Class-D on the second generation, DSP processing capacity has increased, power supply has changed to a universal switching supply (just one of details enabling such a compact design) and the speaker elements have been redesigned, including a new shared magnetic core between mids and tweeter element.

Lots of this information can be found in scattered sources, but I think at least some of it actually originates from discussions with Genelec roadshow personnel...
