Genelec 8020DPM Hiss, Normal Behaviour?

Youngling Viestejä: 0 Liittymispäivä: 13.8.2019 Viimeisimmät viestit

My recently purchased Genelec 8020DPM hiss noticeably when turned on.

I'm using them with a UR22mkII interface and this happens even with the master output level at 0 and only gets louder when it gets past the 75% master volume. I'm also using Cordial CFM 3 MV cables.

The sound is faint but definitely noticeable, with my ears next to it its quite loud, while in my normal work position (ears away 70 cm from the monitors) its just barely noticeable.

Adjusting the input sensitivity to from -6db to +6db changed nothing.

They also "pop" when turned on

I'm attaching an audio file. There's come computer fans background noise but you can still hear it. from 00:00:00 to 00:01:50 turned off, 00:01:50 turned on -you can hear the switch click and the aforementioned "pop" and hiss/white noise. Turned off at 00:06:09

Is all of this normal behaviour or should i be contacting technical support?

The sounds you describe is normal sound associated with speaker operation. All the active speakers amplifiers generates, sound which is heard through the speaker elements. This is called self generated noise level, which is max. 5 dBA for that model. This is a very low noise level and most of the active speakers on the markets are not capable of such a low base noise. Of course, in a very quiet room and listening to it close, the normal self generated noise can be heard if there is no other sound or music in the background. The "pop" sound you mentioned is also normal behavior for the monitor.

Please remember that also your sound source can generate some noise, and it is easy to test if the sound source is causing higher noise by removing the signal cable from the monitor, and do listening test.
