8020D treble issue

Youngling Viestejä: 4 Liittymispäivä: 26.4.2019 Viimeisimmät viestit

I've using these monitors for few months already, I'm happy with the results but I've had only one issue that is bothering me.

The -2db treble tilt is too much and without the tilt I have ear fatigue, because of the slight elevation in the 15-20kHz range. -1db  tilt would be the ideal solution for me.  Near the DIP switches there are small potentiometers inside. I've seen few factory videos where they use these potmeters to calibrate the speakers to the factory spec. Which one is the treble control? I've no worries about messing around the factory sound, that -1db tilt would be great for me. Thanks!

It's quite obvious that the metal tweeter is not that ear friendly for me, even these quality ones can create ear fatigue over time, and that's not good when doing your job. I've heard lot of speakers and yes i'm sensitive at that frequency range where these speakers have a small bump. Adjsting 2db steps for the woofer is fine, but with tweeters, I'm not sure about that...

Please look at the attached graph I created for 0, -1, -2db

The material of the tweeter is irrelevant to the response of the speaker. There are good or bad designs with any kind of material.

I have the 8020 and they are neither fatigue, nor "sweet". They are as flat as any speaker at this price can be. If you have a proplem with them is more probable to have issues with your equipent or your space. You have to measure the correlation of your system (equipment) with your room. A measurement mike and REW could give you the result.

It's a bit more complicated than the material. I think I have a psychoacoustic phenomen. I always had rolled off treble in the upper frequencies with my old monitors, because the silk dome tweeters are in general (not always) have a rolling off character in the 15-20kHz region, so the energy is less and less going up to the boundaries of the human ear. But the metal tweeters have a diferrent frequency response and general they have more energy up to the 20Khz. Just have a look few speakers with metal and few with silk dome. It is almost a general thing. Yes it's dependent on the design and the room of course but this character is still there, and it's not irrelevant. Every material has sound characteristics, it's just physics. I've already measured the response and i have around +1 or 1.5 db more energy in the 18 kHz than the 5-15 kHz range, the monitors are very flat but they are still not perfect and they have their own character. From the objective point, the 0 db point the treble in the studio monitors is flat + - 2db, but in my point of view I have a bigger change in the 18-20 kHz range from around -1 or -2 db (my old monitors) to +1db (Genelec). I hope you can understand now this  "psychoacustic" case. The 2db stepping is a bit too much, to adjust something, 1db would be more useful in my case. That's the only problem with these Genelecs, I think I will change to the SAM system or to other system where I have more control, and that's all.
