How to safely get started with GLM + 8330a monitors

I just had a loud volume accident with my monitors and I would like to ensure I don't have another one. I'm wearing hearing protecting around them until trust can be re-established.

I have had a pair of 8330a monitors for over a year now, both connected to my Focusrite interface over an analogue connection. I could use the analogue volume control on the interface and know with confidence that it would represent what I could expect to come out of the monitors.

I finally acquired the GLM kit and 9310 volume control. I disconnected the analogue cables, and rewired as digital, networked to the GLM adapter, connected the volume control to the adapter, and connected the adapter to my pc via usb. I played to music to test everything out - sound came from the monitors and the volume control functioned as expected.

Next I started GLM 4. I successfully dragged the left-right monitors onto the honeycomb grid, calibrated using the supplied microphone, and saved the group preset. All of that went smoothly. However, when I shut down GLM4, I could no longer get sound to play from the monitors (though, the power lights were still on). I fiddled with the volume knob to no effect. When I restarted GLM4, the music briefly played but then quickly turned off. Turning the volume control would cause a graphic in GLM4 to follow suit, but no music.

I once again shut down GLM4, turned off the monitors manually and then turned them back on. The power lights immediately turned from green to red and the music was at full volume - ouch. The volume control no longer had any effect and I turned the speakers off manually.

I want to ensure the 9310 volume knob ALWAYS represents the lever of sound I can expect to be exposed to.
What do I need to do differently to get working something as fundamental as sound emerging from the monitors?
Does GLM4 need to always be up and running for this configuration to work?
What am I doing wrong?

I figured this out. rtfm. I had been following the quick start guide which didn't address a few details that made the difference for me.
1. By default, the monitors' default state is full volume.
2. After calibrating, there's a separate menu to actually load the settings into the monitors' memory. The current volume level is one of those settings.
3. The gml adapter volume only overrides the monitors' programmed volume when the glm software is running, OR if the adapter is disconnected from the computer.

Since I intend to always use the adapter, a good safety measure for me is to set the monitors to default to a lower volume level.

I had a couple other issues going on, but the above are the key, and perhaps some safe usage information could be added to future versions of the quick start.

There's maybe something even better:
under group.> "edit acoustics all" you can set a negative level for each speaker.
This gets written to the speaker, no way to get higher with or without GLM.
Most people should be fine with loosing 12db max volume here, home user should be fine with -18db.

Thank you very much for the tip. I'll check that out.
