8260A and using as a Powered Speaker

Youngling Viestejä: 14 Liittymispäivä: 4.2.2013 Viimeisimmät viestit

I am planning on using the 8260A as a Powered Speaker and driven by a Home Theater Preamplifier.

Can I run the room calibration and save it in each speaker and then run the speakers with a HT Preamp without connection to a computer.

Currently I am running it with a digital AES/EBU connection from a M2Tech USB-AES/EBU device but the computer/Genelec software needs to be running in order to start the music.

Yes, you can store calibration to the speakers,
In theGLM software under Group -> Save Group Settings

If you supply your GLM adapter with 5V from a USB phone charger, you won't need the computer or software running anymore.

If your Home Theater Preamplifier uses a potentiometer to control the volume, you might not be doing yourself a favour with the new analog setup.
Sonically and durabilitywise.

@lukester Thank you for your reply.

What are my options ? Are you aware of any Preamps that would be compatible

I truly miss the connectivity options:

- Occasional HDMI input

- Phono MM or MC input

- Spotify/Tidal/Quobuz and Roon.

- RCA and Balanced input connectivity

Can you please help by explaining why potentiometer preamps would damage the speaker in terms of durability?

No, nothing would damage the speakers.
It's just that I've seen too many potentiometers of any price point  die and make the sound really bad and crackly.
A potentiometer is a contact running back and forth over a long resistor, with enough time dust will settle and you'll loose contact/sound.
There's stepped potentiometers to solve this problem, or better yet, you stay digital and use the cheap but excellent GLM Volume Knob to control the volume.

So you can use any Preamp with a digital output for your genelecs, where you alwys leave the volume at 100%, volume is GLM controlled inside the speakers.
Or some soundcard, AD or format converter plus a good Phono preamp. something along those line maybe...
