Close listening distance in large room recommendation

Hi,

My living room size is 6.6mx6m and height is 2m.

However the listening area is a sofa which will have a listening distance of only 2m from the speakers. If you imagine the room in 2d as an almost square then the listening area is in the top left half roughly.

I looked at the recommended listening distances as defined on page 25 of:
http://www.genelec.com/sites/default/fi ... e_2015.pdf

This shows me that a 8010/8020 would be within (but at the very edge of the recommended listening distance) at 2m. I tried a friend's 8010 monitors and a sub and the sound and imaging seemed good from 2m with those too. Also they were able to fill the large room quite well with sound (not to deafening levels but I live in an apartment so that will never be required or possible).

On the other hand all the recommendations I have seen for a room of the overall size I have is for speakers like the M040 and 8040/G Four. I have not heard the M040 but going by the specs they are much more powerful and expensive.

Given my specific case of quite close seating, but located in a large room and the requirement being decent but not very loud desired volume with good imaging will the 8010 be sufficient with a sub or will the M040 be more suitable?

Thanks!

Hi,

Our recommended listening distances are not meant to be used as strict rules, more like guidelines. Also, they are directed towards professional listening environments where perfect sound quality is crucial.

There is no doubt that larger monitors would not be able to provide better overall sound quality but since you have already tested the 8010's with a subwoofer and found them well sufficient, doesn't that pretty much answer to your question? :)
