8010A - high-pitched whine

Hi,

I bought a pair of 8010As in Oct last year and recently noticed that one of them has started to make (or maybe it always did and I didn't notice? - not sure) a high-pitched whine when in 'standby' mode. By 'standby' I mean switched off but plugged in (to the mains electricity). If I switch the monitor on, or take the power lead out, the whine goes away. It behaves in this way whether or not there is an audio connection plugged into it. If I switch the monitors' power leads the same one of the pair still makes the whine (ie it doesn't seem to be to do with the power lead).

In testing I've now noticed that the other monitor actually produces the same whining noise but it's much quieter.

Has anyone else experienced this behaviour? Any ideas on a fix?

Thanks, Ian.

Hi Ian,

Actually that is perfectly normal behaviour. There is a very faint high pitched sound coming out of the back of the monitor when it is in standby mode. This should not be audible unless the room is dead silent and you are at very close distance to the monitor.

Hi Ilkka,

I'm afraid that I find your response disappointingly complacent.

Do you think it acceptable in a professional audio product that it emits an audible whining noise when in standby mode? I do not. I'd call it a design flaw.

It may be that if there is other ambient noise in the room it would likely mask the noise of your monitors but you can hardly design a product to rely on such a thing, which, in a sense, is what you're suggesting.

As I've already said, one of my monitors makes considerably more of this noise than the other one. I'd describe the amount of noise that the quieter one makes as 'borderline acceptable', but only 'borderline'. I'd far rather it made no audible noise whatsoever. The louder one is entirely unacceptable.

Which of my two units is the more typical of the 8010A in general I wonder? If I knew that my quieter monitor was typical I'd have the noisy one replaced. But I have no way of knowing.

Not happy.

Ian.

Hi Ian,

I am sorry if my reply wasn't satisfying you. I didn't meant to suggest that design flaws would be accepted in any form, but you should notice that there is always some self generated noise coming out of an amplified system such as an active monitor. We specify the level of noise for every product, and for 8010A it is at most 5 dBA at 1 m distance.

As I've already said, one of my monitors makes considerably more of this noise than the other one. If there is a clear difference between two units, it would suggest that the other one has a problem. I don't know where you are located but you should find your local distributor here and open a discussion with them. Warranty issues are always handled with the dealer (and their distributor) you bought the products from.

This noise is the hf switching power supply. A lot of modern electronics make this noise. My 8010's do this also.
