Calibrating 5040

I am having a rough time setting up my 5040 with my 6010's. It's my first subwoofer so bear with me. I've set the Roll of at -4dB and sublevel around 9 o'clock but the phase control is the tricky part. I've tried the setup guide in the Operating manual but it's nearly impossible to hear any differences when tuning in for the lowest level. Perhaps the position of the subwoofer is incorrect? For now I think the 270 degree setting sounds best, but with some songs it sounds out of step I think...

The 5040 is awesome by the way, I really love the way it sounds :D

Hi,

The placement looks good, corner gives you maximum boost but also maximum and minimum variation when it comes to room modes. You could try to move it slightly towards your TV and see if you get more balanced sound.

Setting the phase is difficult by ear. Have you tried it with music or 85 H test tone? I would definitely recommend the latter, and also a friend to help. It's much easier to listen while someone else switches the settings.

I used the 85Hz test tone, also had a friend listening while I played with the dipswitches but cant really tell which mode has the lowest sound. Do you usually run thist test with high or low volume?

Did you have the speakers playing at the same time? Normal volume is sufficient.

I'll kill a few more hours trying to get it the way I want. Perhaps getting the mains cable right too, which side on the mains input is L and N?

I recall that too, just wasn't sure it was the same with the subwoofers, but thank you

Been playing around alot with getting the best calibration. I have tried other methods aswell. One method was a 85Hz sine wave and then measure the loudest SPL I can get playing around with the phase control. As far as I am concerned, this is the exact opposite of what Genelec recommends. I trust that Genelec knows what they're doing,
else I wouldn't love the sound the bring to my ears  But just out of curiosity, how come these two methods are the opposite to eachother? The calibration method is from a Sound & Vision article I found on the internet.

For me 0 degrees gets the loudest sound and I think it's the best sounding one, but the differences between the settings are hair thin. :|

What you find when measuring is that maybe 2 or 3 settings sound very close to each other but there is always one phase setting that is clearly the lowest.... The easiest thing to do from here is to assume the lowest level is out of phase, so in phase will be 180 degrees from this lowest measurement... I hope this makes sense...

Actually the end result is just the same, only the means to get there are different/opposite. Our instructions are to find the quietest setting (180 deg out of phase) and then flip the 180 deg dip around to get it in phase.

Yes now that I've read 1038's post it struck me, you flip it to the opposite  I adjusted the gain level to a lower setting than before (9 o'clock) and it made a huge difference.
