8330 with 9000A volume control?

Hi!
I am eager to recieve my recently ordered 8330SAM kit (white speakers). I will for sure take benefit of the SAM functionality but once it is set, I will disconnect and just let'em play. Firstly for calibration purpose to set a "neutral" curve, but secondly also to fool around to find the subjectively best sound for my room, hence maybe-not-a-flat-curve. Note, I will use the 8330's for listening, not production.
Now, the 9310A volume control is included 8330SAM pack. It is black. The speakers are white. Many of my Scandinavian neighbours know we dress our houses and homes in...white (ljust och fräscht). I might be superficial but I pretty much prefer a white volume control such as can be separately ordered in the "consumer" model , i.e. 9000A.
So, once the room correction is done, and I disconnect the GLM network, can I plug in a white 9000A to the 8330 speakers? The signal is passed through a DAC (Benchmark) with volume control but I prefer an on-desk volume control for our kids to handle.
The black 9310A is only connected to the GLM network adapter and can only be used in conjunction with GLM connected anyway, correct?
Also, will the 9000A work if the signal source is digitally connected straight into the 8330 (AES/EBU) or do I have to use the GLM for volume controlling if 8330 is taking care of the digital signal?
Thanks!
/Per

Hi,

Thank you for your post! Unfortunately even though 9310A and 9000A look almost the same, the functionality is totally different. The 9000A can't be plugged into the GLM adapter because it has different connections and different functionality.

Currently we offer the 9310A only in black colour because SAM series monitors are mainly used in professional studios etc where black is the preferred colour.

9310A volume control needs an active GLM network (adapter doesn't need to be connected to a computer, only powered by 5 volt source) and it works with both analogue and digital signals as it controls the volume chip inside the speaker, same way as you would adjust the volume straight from the GLM software.

Hi Ilkka!

Thanks for your reply.

OK. I understand the adapter is somewhat a "hub" in this context and can be in a "passive" mode to use the 9310A for volume controlling. But, according to the Genelec webpage, the 9000A "provides convenient volume control for all Genelec studio monitors and active speakers". Is this valid for the 8330 as well? With the 9310A disconnected of course.

I kind of strive for a minimal setup and if the adapter is excessive, in else situations than calibration and room correction, I prefer to disconnect and store away from the speakers. If possible to use a (white) 9000A, I can benefit from both a color matched system/interior as well as a slim(mer) system.
If possible to use the 9000A with 8330, is it also possible when/if I connect the 8330 digitally?

Thanks!

Hi,

The 9000A can be used for volume control with all Genelec active monitors but the method is totally different from GLM & 9310A combination. 9000A is just a simple analogue controller that you will plug between your source and speakers. It will work only in analogue domain.

Hi laparn,

you could always simply buy the wireless remote control for GLM 2 then you wouldn't have the color problem...

That's if course an option, Steve. Thanks for the hint!

The knob is handy for out kids and much more inituative...from a kid perspective. The one does of course not eclude the other.
