Connecting a 7060B to a PS Audio Directstream DAC

Youngling Viestejä: 7 Liittymispäivä: 7.4.2015 Viimeisimmät viestit
I have a couple of 8040B monitors and a 7060B subwoofer in a 2.1 system. I have them connected to a PS Audio Directstream DAC and the sound I get on the 8040B is just freakingly beautiful. The only problem is that the 7060B doesn't reproduce any signal at all. The Directstream has a nominal output power of2.81 Vrms (+8dBV)/5.3 Vrms (+12dBV). Will this be sufficient to drive the 7060B? Or am I looking at getting a preamp?

If it drives your 8040's it'll drive the 7060.

How do you have it wired?

I have it connected via XLR from the Directstream output to the L/R inputs and the 8040Bs to the 7060B's L/R outputs

It should be wired from the outputs of your DAC to the 7060's L&R input, and then from the 7060's L&R Output to the 8040B's inputs...

Is the LED on the subwoofer on?

Thanks Steve, the 7060B is plugged exactly as you describe and the LED is on.If I may add, when I connect the sub directly to the computer's sound card, it works perfectly and the array with the 8040s performs as expected. I'm trying different options this morning and I'll post my findings. Many thanks again.

I've tried a couple of things to no avail. I plugged the 7060 to the DAC RCA output with adapters, and the 8040s to the balanced output. No sound on the sub, and if the volume on the DAC is increased to the maximum, there's a faint signal coming out of it. Next I used a Y XLR adapter to separate the 8040s from the 7060, and the same results. Even manipulating the sensitivity level doesn't make a difference. Maybe the signal coming out of the DCA is not strong enough for the crossover? Would I need a preamp? And if I do, Which one would you recommend?

Thank you

turn the 7060's sensitivity all the way up (to the right) -6dBu.

I had a client a few months ago who described the same thing, he brought his subwoofer in and it was turned down to +12dBu, he thought the +12 was louder than -6dBu.... Make sure it is -6dBu to start with...

Thank you Steve for the suggestion. That's something I tried from the beginning. I believe it has something to do with how the signal comes out of the DAC. I'll tinker with it a bit more while waiting for some suggestions from PS Audio. But more and more it seems I need a preamp or an external crossover.

you don't need a pre-amp. There is a ton of output from the DAC.

What type of material are you playing to test the sub, music or tones?

The sub has a built in tone generator, turn that on to make sure it is working, you need to switch the last 2 dip switches from the block near the sensitivity adjustment.

Do you have anything plugged into either the bypass or remote inputs?

Solved! The switch for the +10 dB was ON. Just switched it off and Absolute Bliss!! Thank you Steve for pointing me in the right direction. Very much appreciated

Congrats on getting it sorted....

Now spend some time calibrating it.

Do you have an SPL meter?
