Genelec 1030a/Subwoofer 1092 question crossover

Youngling Viestejä: 2 Liittymispäivä: 5.4.2015 Viimeisimmät viestit
Hello,

Is there is an interest or is it possible or good to use the Genelec 1030a and Subwoofer Genelec 1092 with a different set of speaker outputs on my Monitor Control box, i.e. like Speaker Output A connected directlty to 1030 and Speaker Output B connected to the subwoofer 1092 ?

What about the crossover point in that case?

Can't it be good to run the 1030 full range with no crossover ?

Might sound like a weird question, by i wou!d like to make it clear in my mind,

Best

Hi!

Genelec subwoofers are designed to integrate seamlessly with the monitors, in terms of frequency range extension. This is done by having the bass management filter built in to the subwoofers. It is always suggested to run the signal thru the subwoofer in studio monitoring appplication. With these products in question, the low frequency output would most likely be very boosted, if the 1030A is run full range. There will be no damage to the products, if they are run from separate outputs and with full range signal, but the resulting listening experience will not be neutral and flat.

For purely entertaining purposes, full range configuration will offer much more base!

Best Regards, Markus

Hello Markus,

Thanks for your kind reply and explanations.

I have another question regarding 1030 and 1092, i bought first the 1030 and then a few years after the 1030.

1) From the beginning I always had the feeling that when the subwoofer is bypassed with a pedal footswitch that there is still a kind of slight cut in bass frequencies on the 1030, comparing to sound i get when i plug the signal direct to the 1030.

I use no dip switch either on the 1030 or the 1092.

2) Also another side of the question, I am using this setup since many years now (10 years approx), is it possible that the woofer on the 1030 needs to be "re-glued", i've read on the forum so user had to this ...

How to check that it needs to be done please?

Maybe it could it explain the feeling of losing bass from 1030 over time

Hi,

1) There shouldn't be any difference between these two ways of connecting the speakers. Can you confirm your suspicions by measuring the frequency response of each setup option? If there truly is an audible difference, it should show up there.

2) "Re-gluing" refers to operation of replacing the whole cone assembly with a new one which is necessary only if the original has been damaged somehow, for example by puncturing the cone or the rubber surround. If the cone and surround look fine, there is no need for replacement.
