5.2 surround with 5040 and 6010

Hello,

I have 5 6010 speakers and 2 5040 subwoofers for my home theater system. How might I get some benefit from having 2 subwoofers? One idea is to have one sub dedicated to the rear surround speakers. Does anybody have ideas about this for me? Or should I send one sub straight to Ebay and forget about it?

Many thanks!

Hi Nate,

Don't sell your other subwoofer! You may find this article interesting: http://www.audioholics.com/room-acousti ... ular-rooms :)

Thank you Ilkka! That was what I was hoping you would say and I will try to make some sense of that article you linked me to. Take care,

Nate

Hi Ilkka,

Can I also split my rear surround channels and power two 6010s on each one, thus using the 5040 sub with a total of 7 6010 speakers? Or will that hurt the subwoofer? I ask because I want to direct the rear surround towards two different listening locations.

Thank you! - Nate K. in Berkeley

Hi Nate,

This kind of configuration is perfectly OK! Since our speakers are active speakers having their own power amplifiers inside, two speakers won't strain the subwoofer any more than a single speaker.

Dear Ilkka,

What is the easiest way to connect a second subwoofer? I currently have too many wires! I would love to simply split the second sub off of the first with one RCA cable and leave the volume knob disconnected. Or do the speakers need wires to travel to both subwoofers?

Thank you,

Hi Nate,

Our larger subwoofers have a sum out signal connector which allow an easy connection of multiple subs with just one cable. Unfortunately 5040 does not have it because it is typically used in smaller systems which need only one subwoofer. Basically you would need to route all input cables to both subwoofers. Output to speakers should only leave from one of the subs. One easier option could be to only route the LFE to other sub, that's only one cable.

Thanks again for your prompt reply Ilkka. Is there any disadvantage to only routing the LFE to the other sub? That does sound easiest.

Then the other subwoofer is only reproducing the LFE channel while the other subwoofer plays the redirected bass from all five channels + LFE. But then again LFE is the channel where most of the bass is so I don't see a problem there.
