Genelec Community Forum has been archived

Thank you for all the years of Community discussions and activity!

The time has come for us to retire the community forums, but we will keep everything available for reading. There is a lot of valuable content written over the years, and you'll be able to access all of that. However, no new posts can be written, or old posts modified.

If you have questions, we recommend you use the Support function on the bottom right corner to contact our Customer Support directly.

Alternatively, if you wish to engage in a community discussion with other people, there are many active forums available. There is also an active, fan managed GENELEC COMMUNITY in Facebook, and many Genelec employees are active in the discussions there.

We are sorry for any possible inconvenience this may cause you, but we hope to hear from you through the other channels mentioned above.

Noise/hum from speakers?!

There is a small noise or hum coming from the speakers when no sound is playing, this is even when the signal cables are detached. It's only audible when you're really close to the speakers. What is this?

Hi,

That is the background noise of the amplifier(s). All amplifiers (including amplifiers used with passive speakers) have some amount of noise which is then emitted through the drive units at certain level, depending on the gain structure of the signal path. Our products are typically specified to have less than 10 dBA SPL or less than 5 dBA SPL self generated noise in free field @ 1 m on axis. This level is so low that you need a quiet room and close distance to be able to hear it.

Nothing to worry about then, I was just unsure since I couldn't recall if I ever heard these noises with my previous pairs of Genelec's. Thanks for the help Ilkka, always appreciated.
