Advice for new buyer
Youngling Viestejä: 5 Liittymispäivä: 18.8.2014 Viimeisimmät viestitI am new to Genelec, so some help would be very welcome.
I am looking for active speakers for a 2 channel music listening application, for my open plan dining room, with speakers to be sited on a shelf along a wall. I am presently using a pair of active speakers there - Sonos Play 1 units - receiving music signals wirelessly from a NAS/HDD, and am looking for enhanced sound quality. For a third party active speaker pair, as source I would use Sonos Connect which would receive the music signal wirelessly and can output them in analog via RCA outputs or in digital via either coax or optical output jacks, with a built in volume control. The output signal levels from the analog outs aren't specified, but I estimate them to be a little lower than from most CD players - around 2V.
For the application, on what basis would I choose between say, the G2 pair and the M030? Or am I better of selecting from only the G series?
Thanks in advance for any inputs.
PS: A follow up question to clarify. I think that in the G series, the volume can be adjusted on the speakers only to a limited degree, and in use, the volume levels will have to be changed from the source. Am I correct? What is the case with the M030, is it similar?

G Two has a fixed input sensitivity setting while M series speakers have three different options: 0 dB, -10 dB and -20 dB settings. But in general the volume control should be done at the source.

Thanks for that input - I will do a listening demo in any case because this will be my first studio monitor experience, having used hifi quality passive speakers till now. But your comment above is a little different from what the Indian distributor told me when I asked the same question - all Genelecs sound the same, with the exception of loudness levels and LF response as they get bigger/costlier is the answer I got. I suppose that applies within the series and there is a sonic difference across the G and M series.
A follow up question - I will be keeping the speakers on a long but very robust shelf. Reasonably deep to allow about 25 cms clearance behind. And one speaker will be in a corner but I can give it 30=35 cms clearance to the corner wall. And I can place the speakers very close to the front edge of the shelf.
Given this situation, is there anything you can advice to prefer G over M or vice versa? I would not be able to test this, the listening demo is possible only at the distributor office in a nearby city.
The M range is more attractive from a value for money perspective, obviously. The G range is currently not imported into India so I would have to look at the 8020/8030. So in reality for me the choice would be between those and the MO30.

Another question regarding the above - the source I will use to wire to the RCA input on the M030 pair has a voltage of approx 2V rms at full volume setting. Given this, what would be the recommended dB setting on the M030 so that they deliver the specified sound levels in full, but also don't clip?
A response to my preceding post will also be appreciated.

Yes, the general sonic character is shared with all Genelec speaker models, but of course if you go into micro details, you will notice some subtle differences even within the the same series. There fore I always recommend a listening demo, especially for more experienced users.

I doubt you would notice much sonic difference between them, it is more about the visual outlook and price. The M series offers a lot of performance for the price they cost!

2 volts RMS equals to ~8 dBu which would be enough to drive the speaker to full output at -10 dB sensitivity setting. You might want to experiment this though because the recording level of the source material also affects to this.

Many thanks for this and the other inputs, very helpful. With 2V, it looks like one has flexibility on both sides while setting the output level on the speaker.
From a spec/price point of view I see the M030 as the best value for my application. I will of course do a demo first, but this understanding is a very good starting point.

Yoda Viestejä: 2564 Liittymispäivä: 23.3.2009 Viimeisimmät viestitIf I were to want to add a sub to the M030 pair in future, would the F one be a compatible match?
It can be used but it's not a perfect match. Our recommendation for subwoofer is 7060B or F Two.
