Positioning 8260A's on the floor

Hello,

The height of the ceiling is 260 cm, the listening height is 130 cm, so I will have reflections from the floor AND the ceiling from about the middle between the speakers and the listening position.

What if I position the speakers on the floor ? I will still have reflections from the ceiling (but I can install absorbers) but none from the floor (reflections will go under the listening postion).

It will be for hifi use at home, in the living room with no obstacles between the speakers and the listening position.

Is this a bad idea ? Why (not)?

Thanks in advance,

Serge

Hi Serge,

positioning your speakers... any speakers is always a matter of compromise.

I usually try and get my clients to install their speakers at least 1m from floor, but as you have stated, you also don't want the speakers half way from floor to ceiling.

I have just finished setting up 3 8260's as LCR in a home theatre room where they are on the floor. I was brought into the project late, so i couldn't change the projection screen to microperfed and there was no room above the screen.

Although not ideal, it sounded great. I would have sounded better with the speakers higher up. I have talked the client into lifting the speakers just below the screen frame, so we will be building custom stands that will be about 150mm tall, not much, but everything helps. GLM is a godsend in these situations, it really makes the best out of a bad install.

The room reflections wont work as you think, they will not simply go under the listening position. Also with the speakers on the floor, the first reflection will be very close time wise to the direct sound, not great.... You will find the lower mids will muddy up quite alot with the speakers down low, but as i said, GLM will help.

Thank you again Steve.

So, if I understand you well, positioning the speakers on the ground is not bad by definition and worth a try. Correct?

Well it is bad, but then again it is always a matter of which compromise is BEST!

OK, I will avoid placing them on the floor, but I will take care not to place them in the middle between ceiling and floor.

Thanks for your input,

Serge
