Digital interface for 8xxx series - upgrade from 2.2 to 5.2

Hey,

I have currently a setup of 2x8260A and 2x7270A and the sound is just great. Im planning to upgrade them to 5.2 surround system to be used with multichannel material (Mainly for watching movies and other recreation).

Now, keeping things fully digital comes with some demands concerning additional speakers and a new multichannel capable digital audio interface between the computer and the 7270 subwoofer. Im using mac with thunderbolt and USB connections to feed them, so firewire adapter could be an option.

The questions are:

- Any suggestions for DD converter/interface with balanced 4 channel AES3 output (5.1) capability ? Weiss AFI1 is the only one I have been looking into so far, however it is equipped with firewire which at least needs an adapter to work. Any other ideas within a similar price range or lower ?? I would gladly be looking USB and other alternatives as well.

- Since multichannel is going to be somewhat secondarily used for recreational purposes, I was thinking of adding three 8250A's as centre speaker and surround speakers. I know the sound stage at front might change with a different speaker, but should that really be an issue with 8250A ? Since we are not talking about editing and the price difference compared to third 8260 would be significant. Room size is not an issue in this particular case

Hi Toni,

for HomeCinema use the 8250 will work as a centerspeaker. But with three 8250 it will be much better, especialy for professional work. The 8250 sound more different to the 8260 then to all smaller ones.

Hey Toni

- I looked around for a suitable DDC, and ended up choosing the AFI-1.
My closest alternatives were more expensive as they had AD & DA included.
I almost got a converter from the Lynx Aurora family, starting at USD 1800,-

I probably would have gone for a Lynx with Thunderbolt today.
Running the AFI-1 through Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock, a great solution:

- I think the 8260 is the most underrated high end audio equipment I have ever heard.
I did consider going with the 8250 for the center monitor, but found that the center channel is the most important in most mixes.
Well recorded music in surround adds so many layers and dimension, that is a complete shame to go with a 8250.
You are welcome to come try out my setup in Copenhagen, Denmark before you make up your mind ;)

And yes, with a rig of that caliber, you should definitely get some surround albums.
Have a look at these for inspiration:

Thank you for your comments,

I ended up having a second hand Weiss AFI-1 for around 1000 Eur and it really does the job nicely.

Now i just have to get those center speakers on site and decide which one.

Most probably it is not the right place to make savings - and i think I'll go with the third 8260.

... Probably you can use 8240 for the Rears to save some bugs...
