Gradual upgrade to DSP with 7270a subwoofer first
Youngling Viestejä: 3 Liittymispäivä: 19.12.2013 Viimeisimmät viestitI started with 2x 1029a as my main speakers for video editing. They moved to surround duty as I got 2x 8030a as my main nearfields. Then the 1029a's switched to secondary nearfields as I got 3x 1032a near/midfields.
I eventually ended up with 4x 8030a which are now the surrounds in a 7.1 configuration.
The 3x 1032a I now have as near/midfields pushed the 8030a's into surround use.
The 7.1 setup is now:
2x 1029a LR on-desk nearfield (on acoustic isolators)
3x 1032a LCR main (centre behind acoustically transparent projection screen)
4x 8030a Lsr, Rsr, Ls, Rs (7.1 setup)
3x Behringer Ultracurve Pro DEQ2496 (for room correction/EQ/video delay compensation of LCRSub) - they have analogue and AES/EBU inputs/outputs
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/DEQ2496.aspx
1x Yamaha Sub designed for NS10Ms (the weakest part)
The room is about 30m² and 90m³ (5.5m x 6m x 3m). The usual listening position is close to the LCR speakers in the first third of the room. There are couches further back in the back third.
I looked at the 7070a because I thought I couldn't use the DSP range subwoofers with my analogue setup. I get put off by the 6.1 bass management only. And of course I would much prefer an affordable upgrade path looking to the future rather than more investment in non-DSP speakers.
Then I realised the 3x Ultracurve Pros could convert my signal to AES/EBU for the LCRSub part of the 7.1 configuration (I plan to buy 2 more Ultracurves for the surrounds).
Can I use a 7270a? This would be much better long term as I could gradually upgrade my other units to DSP and also use a 7.1 configuration with it as sub.
The analogue outputs of the Ultracurves would go to the analogue speakers as normal. I can use the Ultracurve delay function to compensate for the (<5 ms) AES/EBU latency if it hasn't happened already when the analogue signal entered the digital Ultracurves.
I realise the bass management (redirect) of the 7270a won't work for analogue output as I would need further D/A convertors (will it if I did have further D/As?). ...However if it low pass filters and sums the input signals as normal (outputted AES/EBU from Ultracurve before EQ/shelving applied to Ultracurve's analogue outputs) - will a solution of using the Ultracurve HPF provide the equivalent of crossover control bass management to the analogue units?
I should be able to use the manual switches on the 7270a for phase etc?
I don't expect it to be perfect. I just want a gradual upgrade path where I can still use old gear until it gets completely replaced (and then taken home from work!).
Also - why don't the DSP manuals mention the common 7.1 configuration with 4 surrounds rather than 5 at the front?

Of course you need to play with crossovers and delay/phase more than you would with a full Genelec DSP system, but it sounds like you are prepared for that. You can control the subwoofer in manual control mode as you would a normal analogue subwoofer. Of course then you are limited to the controls available there and are not able to take advantage of the advanced GLM controls, not to mention AutoCal calibration.

Youngling Viestejä: 3 Liittymispäivä: 19.12.2013 Viimeisimmät viestitAlso - why don't the DSP manuals mention the common 7.1 configuration with 3 front/4 surrounds (Dolby/DTS 7.1) as well as the (Sony SDDS 7.1) 5 front/2 surround configuration?
Is it irrelevant for bass management (what configuration any of the speakers are in)?
Does it become relevant for DSP software calculating appropriate delay if the software thinks it's getting a signal from a speaker assigned a different position? e.g. The software think it's getting a signal from a SDDS 7.1 centre right (as opposed to centre or right) positioned speaker when it's actually getting it from a Dolby 7.1 surround rear left positioning?
(maybe I should move this to a separate topic - and have)

Unfortunately I don't have information on this.

It is irrelevant because as both the Dolby and ITU-R recommend, all speakers should be positioned to equal distance from the listener. Therefore GLM/AutoCal tries to equalize the flight time differences so that the signal from each speaker arrives to the listening position exactly at the same time.
