Genelec 8240a - system setup via AES/EBU

Dear all,

I've recently purchased a pair of 8240a's and I am currently waiting for the GLM package to arrive. Can't wait!!!!! ;)
In the meantime I am struggling to get my head around my setup: I have my computer connected via firewire to a MOTU 896 interface and then linking the Motu analog main outputs (left + right) to each 8240a, accordingly.
Now, as daft as it may sound, I am puzzled with the AES/EBU output in the MOTU and how can I possibly make use of it to connect the 8240a's: firstly because is just a single XLR output to two speakers, secondly how can I possibly have a stereo configuration under these conditions?

Am I right to assume that the 8240a's will need to be feed digitally by a unit with at least 2 AES/EBU outputs? Also, and to bring this to an end, how is the AES/EBU THRU purpose and how is it used in the "real world"?

I apologise in advance for the questions and doubts I have but I'm just trying to fully understand these amazing speakers and learning how to make the most out of them.

All the best.

Hello!

First of all you need to decide if you want to drive the speakers via analog (as you have connected them now) or digitally via AES/EBU. The sound of both options will be identical. I personally would only connect one or the other.

As soon as you add a 7200 subwoofer it must be digital, as these do not handle analog.

So for now with the 8240s only: If you go with the digital option: If the AES/EBU cable carries two digital audio channels, run another cable from the “Thru” output of the loudspeaker to the input of the next loudspeaker.

Hope that helps...cheers

Dear Maximilian,

Thank you very much for the clarification. Much appreciated!!!
Has I'm not familiar with AES/EBU technology I wasn't aware - at all - that one single cable would carry both right and left channels... Also, following your reply, I read that appropriate AES/EBU cables are needed for the connections as the regular XLR mic lead, although very similar, does not carry the signal.
So, I reckon my mistake (and confusion) lies in the fact that I was completely convinced that the conventional mic lead would do the job. Clearly not!!!
Dear me...

All the best!

Ric

Dear Genelec friends,

I've got now a brand new set of AES/EBU cables and I've just wired my system: MOTU 896 AES OUT > 8240a AES IN (Right) > 8240a AES THRU (Right) > 8240a AES IN (Left)

Now, my problem remains the same... I have no stereo separation!?!?!

I went to the MOTU Audio setup properties and choose the AES/EBU outputs, launched Logic Pro 9 and in the audio preferences choose the motu channels 9-10 (default for the digital outputs).
The problem is whenever I hit play and change the panning settings in the output fader (or in any other channel, basically) I have no clear stereo separation! I can hear however a slight change in volume in both speakers ( quite similar to a stereo spreader) but nothing close to a clear Left to Right image separation. I have although an healthy output meter readings both R + L in the MOTU interface.

I completely understand this is going slightly beyond the Genelec topic but I am getting quite desperate and I can't get my head around this problem. I've ran out of options!...

Help me please!!!

All the best.

Just get the GLM package and use the system as it was designed.

It's magnificent, especially when you eventually try it out with a matching sub.

Hi,

By default, both speakers are playing a sum (A+B) of both AES/EBU channels. If you don't plan to use GLM, you have to configure it manually. Please set the left speaker to play channel A (set 2nd dip on the 2nd row ON), and right speaker to play channel B (set 3rd dip on the 2nd row ON). Also check that 1st dip on 2nd row is set to OFF.
