Genelec 8030a volume differences

Youngling Viestejä: 3 Liittymispäivä: 27.7.2013 Viimeisimmät viestit
Hello,

recently i've purchased two 8030a Genelecs. I love them but i've noticed that one speaker seems slightly quieter. I record them one after another at the maximum volume (using Rode M3) at the same distance and the first speaker was -10.99db at it's loudest point and second was 10.94db (not much of a difference but the impression is still there). I didn't noticed any frequency distortions or disparity between them but it wasn't recorded at good acoustic conditions so it might not be accurate.
I just wanted to ask is there a possibility that one is just quieter?

Thanks,
Filip

Hi,

If I understand correctly, you measured a difference of 0.05 dB between your speakers. That is perfectly normal difference and cannot be heard by a human ear. Typically a level difference of 0.5 - 1.0 dB starts to be audible if you have trained ears.

What kind of signal did you use to measure them? You mention "at the maximum volume", what do you mean by this?

Hi Ilkka,

thank you for reply. By "at maximum volume" i meant volume knobs all the way up on Genelecs and 1/4 volume from Apogee Duet. So it wasn't loud just wanted to be sure volume knob is at the same position on both speakers. I've checked them in two places and the difference was the same (0.05 dB) with pink noise and on regular song
Now i'm working on them with one speaker slightly louder and it sounds ok.

Now i'm also considering getting m030 pair for my second practice place. Mainly for recording instruments and a bit of mixing. Is there much difference between m030 and 8030?

Best,
Filip

Hi Filip,

It all still sounds really strange. No one is able to hear a level difference of 0.05 dB and therefore it doesn't need any level corrections. How were you able to measure such a small difference? Typical professional SPL meters offer a 0.1 dB accuracy. Also it is not possible to measure such a level difference in room because the room acoustics, especially if you are using a wideband signal such as pink noise, will skew the result.

I do trust your ears which tell you that there is a level difference between your speakers, but it is not because of the 0.05 dB difference you measured. There has to be something else going on.

M030 and 8030 have a lot of differences, starting from enclosure, amplifiers, drivers etc. Of course they both share a similar Genelec sound quality.

Hi Ilkka,

it sounds strange indeed. That was the reason i posted this thread in the first place. After all, to cut a long story short, i send it back to shop with exchange request. They send me a new pair of 8030's and they sound perfect. None of previous problems occurred.

As i mentioned before the whole measuring wasn't made in professional circumstances so it's really possible that it wasn't accurate. If not the volume maybe there was something going on with frequencies as i'm 100% sure there was something going on - they simply didn't sound the same. It's hard for me to tell you more details as i didn't get any answer from the shop i purchased and exchange them.

I ended up as a happy user of perfectly working new pair of 8030's.
