All Digital Setup with a Mac Computer

Hi All,

I have been following the forum, but I have not been able to find a direct answer how to create an all digital setup with Genelec 8240/8250 DSP speakers and a Mac computer. The audio source in a Mac computer is an optical digital audio out, as you well know.

What is required to route this digital signal directly to Genelec DSP speakers with DACs and amplifiers built in? The aim is naturally to have a minimum quality loss and to avoid adding another D/A converter which is already in the speakers.

Thank you for your insight,

Reko Tideman

DDC

You need a DDC of some sorts to give you AES/EBU.

Examle: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=686&p=2360&hilit=stello#p2360

You also need a GLM setup to control the speakers:

Thanks DigiPete. Your old post "DDC USB -> AES/EBU" is an upgrade to my own question. Now, I realise that I want to use the USB out rather than the optical digital audio out.

I refer to the post: http://www.community.genelec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=875

The answer would be:
For all digital stereo: Mac Mini -> USB digital -> Stello U3 converter -> AES/EBU to one 8250, daisy-chain AES/EBU to another.

Naturally, the "Stello U3 converter" part can be something else. Since the topic is "All Digital Setup with a Mac Computer", this thread would easily be a discussion to compare the best ways (budget, quality,..) of going all digital with a Mac computer and DSP Genelecs.

Thanks!

Hi,

just sharing my "temporary" solution for this. I had extra "Behringer DEQ2496 Ultra-Curve Pro" and noticed it was quite useful for this purpose. It has digital/analog XLR, optical and also analog rca input.
It outputs proper AES/EBU signal.
Very useful when changing input method very often for my 8240A/7260A speakers.
