Genelec 8030A monitor problem
Youngling Viestejä: 6 Liittymispäivä: 18.4.2013 Viimeisimmät viestitone of my genelec 8030A has a problem.. in low frequencies it sounds noisy (and it is noisy in general in high volumes). i added a picture of the recording of the sound from the monitor to be explicative.
How much am i going to spend if i would like to repair that? i live in Italy, where should i ask?
and.. is repair really necessary for this problem?
Thanks everybody

edit: this problem is similar to this: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=879
in fact it is a buzz in lower frequencies at high volume
i opened the monitor but i notice that there was no loose part and everything was in place and nothing was broken at first sight

Re: Genelec 8030A monitor problem
Yoda Viestejä: 2564 Liittymispäivä: 23.3.2009 Viimeisimmät viestitThank you for the files, they are much helpful! There is definitely some additional buzzing sound present on the other speaker. It can either be the actual woofer making the noise (it's broken) or something else inside the speaker is being excited by the woofer.
Since you have already opened up the speaker, you could check one thing. On the 8030, the distance between the transformer fixing plate and the woofer magnetic shielding cup is very small. In some rare cases we have noticed they can make a contact (metal to metal) which can cause similar buzzing noise. If that happens, you should place something soft between those parts to prevent them from touching each other. Does the noise change in any way if you rotate the speaker to different positions?

Youngling Viestejä: 6 Liittymispäivä: 18.4.2013 Viimeisimmät viestitAnd if that doesn't solve the problem, how much am i going to spend to change woofer?
Edit: is it possible to open the speaker and turn it on to play something to see if the vibration is coming from behind the woofer? i know that maybe it is a bad idea because of risk of electric shocks but if it is safe enough i would like to try that (maybe if i use rubber gloves?)

It is possible to open up the speaker and turn it on but I can't recommend this because it would be against the electrical safety regulations. It is always advised that only professional service personnel are allowed to open up a speaker.

Re: Genelec 8030A monitor problem
Youngling Viestejä: 6 Liittymispäivä: 18.4.2013 Viimeisimmät viestitAnd, is it possible to order the woofer+magnet part (all the block) or it is only the woofer that costs around 70 euro?
Or is it possible to ship my broken woofer to Genelec Finland to be repaired?
Here ares the videos of how the woofer works at low frequencies. note, in the second video, how the woofer stabilize itself after a short initial shocking attack when starting or raising quickly the volume of a low frequency sound (120 Hz).
the first video is a sweep from 50 Hz
Do you think that is the problem of the entire woofer or only of the surround rubber?

Re: Genelec 8030A monitor problem
Yoda Viestejä: 2564 Liittymispäivä: 23.3.2009 Viimeisimmät viestitAll Genelec spare parts are shipped from Finland and distributed by our official distributors. The response from our Italian distributor sounds very strange, I will contact them myself to see if they have maybe misunderstood your question.
I noticed looking at your video that the magnetic shielding cup looks little strange. There should be a foam ring around the magnet so that the metal cup can't touch the magnet. It looks as if parts of that foam ring are missing? Can you remove the spring that holds the cup and pull out the cup to check if the foam ring is there? If the cup is touching the magnet, it might be the reason for the noise it is producing.

part of the foam is broken (don't know why?!)
could be this the cause of malfunction of the woofer? i think magnet isn't touching the shield anyway, but maybe vibrations transmit through that empty foam space?
How can i proceed filling that foam hole? what kind of glue or what kind of foam should i use?
And, if fixing it doesn't solve the problem, does the spare woofer part is already assembled to the magnet ?

Re: Genelec 8030A monitor problem
Youngling Viestejä: 6 Liittymispäivä: 18.4.2013 Viimeisimmät viestit(I forgot to write that the buzz noise i talked about in the first posts was caused by the deformed front grid, i modeled it with a rubber mallet and that problem seems fixed)
Maybe for this woofer problem in very low frequencies (50-200) there's no fixing procedure..the woofer is simply gone.. i can order one and assembly by myself if the spare woofer part is already assembled to the magnet ..
