I'm probably being embarrassingly stupid, but here's my problem:
I want to connect my two genelec 8020B monitors to my TV and retain control over the sound volume, preferably using the same old remote control. The only way to achieve this on my Sony TV seems to be use the headphone out. What sort of cables should I use?
1) I can connect an XLR-Plug cable through an adapter to the mini-plug input of the headphone out in the TV, but then I get a sound without any vocals: i.e. I lose the middle of the stereo field entirely. Somehow one channel seems to get inverted or something, so all middle sounds are cancelled by phase cancellation? It happens on the way from the headphone out (which works normally otherwise) to the genelec.
2) if I connect with XLR to RCA connectors, I get some hum plus I lose control over volume, as my oldish TV has no option for ruling the RCA audio output through the remote.
3) I have some XLR to RCA adapters. If I attach those to the genelecs, I can then use a cable that combines two RCA males with one stereo miniplug. Vocal's back, so that's great? Except that this does produce lots of hum.
I've looked at the picture of the connector described in the tips section, but from what I see, my alternative 1 seems to be pretty much the same, yet it has the above-descript problem. Or is there something I'm missing here?
If somebody can suggest what sort of cable I should order (I live in Finland) to get this sorted out, I'd appreciate it a lot. I'll throw in a bonus smiley if you manage to explain in simple terms to me what it is that I screwed up here!

I may later on have to consider buying some sort of device for managing my various inputs, and this might allow to solve the above issue(s) as well I suppose. Is there an easy to use, small, and inexpensive device out there that would allow connecting both the TV, a CD player, and some other sources, to one device with remotely controlled input selector and volume control - and preferably with XLR outs, while we're at it?
