Pair of 8020B with 5050A subwoofer

Hi,

I have been planning to buy a 5050A sub to support the pair of my 8020B monitors.
In the manual of 8020B it has been stated that Bass Roll-Off must be activated when monitors are connected to 7050B subwoofer. I assume that same is valid also for 5050A, but please could you confirm this?

Secondly is there any reason why not to buy 5050A instead of new 5051A (or even 7050B)? I'm aware that 5051A supports 5.1 but that has no use for me, because I'm totally happy with the 2.1 setup. As far as I know 5050A and 5051A/7050B are quite a same in performance wise.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that 5050A hasn't been so popular, because it's really hard to find any kind of reviews or user comments about it.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Hi,

The bass roll-off should not be activated with the 5050A subwoofer because it has a built-in bass management which the 7050B doesn't have.

5050A, 7050B and 5051A are very close performance wise. Differences are in the outlook, connectivity and amplifier technology/power.

The 5050A was made specifically for 6020B speaker (almost similar to 8020A) but unfortunate the success was limited.

Hi Ilkka,

and thank you for your reply.
On last Friday I finally bought a new 5050A subwoofer to boost the lowend of my 8020B pair. I haven't got too much time to settle up the 5050A yet, but hopefully I can find some time during the upcoming week to fine tune the settings and get the most out of it.

But I have to say that I was totally suprised when I opened the package and started to read that two page manual which was included. It stated the following:
"The AUTOSTART function described in this chapter is not available in units sold in the EU." :o

Even in Finnish Genelec webpage it has been written that 5050A supports this behavior, and at least I couldn't find any statement that this functionality wouldn't be supported in EU area (same manual can be downloaded in PDF format and I noticed that it is a different version than what the one which was shipped in the 5050A package).

Why is it so; why this functionality has been removed from EU units? Based on my knowledge the new G anf F models will support the autostart functionality, so what can be the reasoning that 5050A wouldn't support it in EU area?

Thank you for your comments.

Btw. Do you have any setting/fine tuning tips for the 8020B+5050A combination? ;)

Hi,

The autostart function has been disabled on the 5050A because it doesn't comply with the ErP2010 standard which states that the power consumption in the stand-by mode has to be less than 1 watt. The new G and F series have a new type of power management system which complies even with the stricter ErP2013 standard (less than 0,5 watt power consumption).

I shall notify people responsible of updating the documentation.

Btw. Do you have any setting/fine tuning tips for the 8020B+5050A combination? ;)

1. Listen to the speakers without the subwoofer connected. Set the bass tilt and treble tilt switches so that you will get natural sounding frequency response (if you can measure it, even better).
2. Connect the subwoofer and set the level, phase and bass roll-off according to the instructions found in the operating manual. Do not engage the bass roll-off switch on the speakers!
3. Enjoy the music! :)
