8020A A love story and a 7050 question

Youngling Viestejä: 3 Liittymispäivä: 3.12.2011 Viimeisimmät viestit
I recently bought a pair of 8020A monitors and now I'm having trouble leaving my apartment because I need to listen to every record I own after realizing hearing every song is like listening to them for the first time.

But I've been playing bass for 13 years and as a bass player I notice there's a slight lack of definition on the low end. Compared to my AKG K701 which reveal each plucking of the strings I was wondering if getting a 7050 subwoofer might do the same thing.

Also the thing is unfortunately there's my neighbors bedroom a few meters from my speakers, will getting the sub harm our relationship in anyway? Or do I need to build some bass traps?

I was so impressed with the 8020s that now I'm tempted to get the low end as well.. even though I'm a starving musician, I might starve some more if it's worth it..

Well I have another question, the 8020As have independent volume controls combined with the power switch. Are small differences in the position of the volume controls inaudible?

Edit : A lightbulb was lit in my head and I figured to put them on full volume and control the output of my Presonus..

Hi,

For sure the 8020A will miss the lowest bass notes you have used to hear. A subwoofer will help with the extension but it doesn't come without any additional problems. Since you will have more low frequency energy in the room, the room modes (standing waves) will be excited more and in a bad case the definition and accuracy of the bass notes isn't as good as you would have hoped for. Luckily that can be cured with sufficient amount (read: usually quite a lot) of acoustical treatment. Second issue you already sort of guessed; low frequencies will travel further and through thicker walls than mids and highs.

Have you considered the option of having a pair of larger monitors instead of adding a subwoofer? For example the 8040A's, or if you want to step right into the audio nirvana with automated DSP room equalization, 8240A's, would do the job just fine without a subwoofer. 8-)

I have the 8020s with the 7050. In my humble opinion, you should buy the sub, it is completelly necessary. If you are surprised with the 8020s, you will equally (or more) surprised with the addition of 7050! The addition will turn your system into a full-range one, you will need to hear all of your music again :)
You can switch all of your powered speakers with a simple multi-socket device, keep the volume low in the beginning :)
The bass waves travelling to your neighbor's bedroom cannot be avoided I am afraid :)
