Hi!

Firstly I'm sorry if I use incorrect terms and words, but I never really had time to study these things.

I have always wondered how much amplifier affects to sound when using active speakers? What does external amplifier and speakers own amplifiers do to the sound? In common logic 8020 wouldn't need external amplifier.

My current setup is old Yamaha RX-v630 6.1 AV receiver, 2x 8020 connected to 7050 which is connected to receivers pre-outs and lastly Yamaha connected with optical wire to my PC.

I ask these questions because that monster receiver of mine takes too much space from my desk and most of its features are now useless when using 2.1 setup. I was planning to change it to this DAC. Does this change have any other advantage than smaller size of the setup.

Hi,

You are being correct that active speakers do not require an external amplifier per se. You can connect them straight to a source, say CD player, but then the volume control becomes an issue. So by minimum, you will need some device with level/volume control between the source and speakers. Typically these kind of devices are called pre-amplifiers or DACs with volume control. If you want a physical volume knob instead of controlling the level from the computer, you should look at this model: http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/summary.php?PID=872

So there will be no difference in sound quality when changing from my current 6.1 AV receiver to DAC Magic Plus?

I can't answer to that question because I haven't listened to those units. Some people hear huge differencies between different cd players, amplifiers, DACs etc., some people hear nothing at all. The only way to be sure is to test it yourself.
