Genelec 8040 Distortion with high spl.

Hello,
I produce mostly techno, but sometimes also dub and d&b. I use a emu 1820m soundcard with an internal mixer. The gain on the Genelecs are set to -6 and the outputs on the internal mixer are set to +4 dB output.
The problem is that when I raise the level on the mixer past aprox 70% of maximum the monitors starts to distort. The tunes are limited to ""modern" standard. RMS around 8 db. The montiors cant take the pressure so to say. The music is often bassheavy so I understand the limitations, but what I want to know is if this is normal behaviour. Also is it bad for the monitors to take this kind of punishment. Ive been thinking of using the distortion lamp in my work as level checker.
Any Thoughts or tips are welcomed.

Cheers
Per

Hello Per,

Can you see the green notification leds on the front panels flickering red at the same time you hear the distortion? It tells you that the amplifier is starting to clip. If you turn up the level even more, the red led will lit constantly and you will notice a slight drop in SPL - this is because the internal protection circuit has been activated to protect the speaker from overloading.

It's not harmful for the speaker to overload it because of the protection circuit, but of course it's not good for your mixes to listen to distorted and slightly compressed signal. If the SPL attained with the 8040A isn't high enough for your mixing level, you should consider adding a subwoofer (7070A would be a good match) or changing them to a larger and more capable models.

Thanx alot for the answer Ilkka. I asume its no problem then. I mean the monitor i just distorting when the red led i sflickering. I just have to keep the monitor control down a bit.
I really like the 8040, suits me perfect. Very nice bass extention I must say. I had a pair of which was supposed to down to 45hz but thes sounds deeper, and more solid. :)
Most of the time I listen far from max so the distorsion thing is no problem really. Just sometimes I like to max ou. My plan is to buy a sub i the future. The 7070A would be preferable. But on the other hand then the 8050 will be a good alternative too, and also cheaper.
