Centre speaker to go with the HT210

Dear Fellow Forumers,

Greetings from the UK.
I am a new comer on the active speakers' world.
I was very lucky to find 3 HT210 ex. demonstration selling on Ebay. So, I didn't waste the opportunity and bought them right away.

Now, waiting for them to arrive, I have some concerns that maybe my fellow forumers can help in addressing them.

The place I have to fit the centre speaker does not allow to have the HT210 standing.
Do you know whether it is possible to place the HT210 horizontally? Any risk of damage to the electronics inside?

If it is highly recommendable not to place it that way then I will certainly keep it as spare/replacement for the R/L Front channels in case one of the two HT210 has a problem.
In this case, what other smaller Genelec would you recommend for the centre and the surround channels, which can fit the HT210 personality?

My room is an L shaped and the listening area is around 3.5x4.5 meters. The sweet point is around 3.5m from the front and left speakers who are placed around 2.5m from each other.

Thanks for your help.

Best regards.

Hello,

You can place the HT210 horizontally, there won't be any issues with the electronics. The only thing that you should consider is the slightly different polar pattern (vertical vs. horizontal), which makes the speaker sound slightly different when you move horizontally, for example if you have a wide sofa etc. But usually this is so small difference that it doesn't cause any problems.

But as a general note, an HT208 can be used as a smaller centre speaker with the HT210s. Surrounds can be either HT208 or even HT206.

Dear Ilkka,

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply.

I think I will try theHT210 in the horizontal position and see if it works well.

What about the 8020A as surrounds?

How close to a corner can the HT210 be placed?

Also, as I am still waiting the delivery, I was wondering what cables do I need to buy.
The preamp/processor (Cyrus AV Master 8.0) has no XLR connections and will need a cable of approx. 2.5 meter long.

Two questions I have:
- What XLR conection does the HT210 have? male or female?
- Is it better to use an RCA to XLR cable or just to use a simple RCA/RCA one?

Finally, does the cable needs to be of a high quality or can it be of the normal quality used with kind of DJ/semi-professional products?

Thanks a lot for your precious help.

Best regards.

I wouldn't go smaller than the 8030A as the HT210 is a quite capable (SPL wise) speaker. 8020A or smaller would limit the useful maximum SPL of the whole system.

There is no general rule. Excessive bass can usually be tamed with dip switches, but if the walls are hard without much absorbing material, early reflections will hinder the overall sound quality.

Female.

It doesn't make any difference as the source is with RCA connections i.e. unbalanced.

Normal quality is enough.

Dear Ilkka,

I am sorry to keep on coming in this space to bother you with my silly questions.

I am intending to put the HT210 on floor stands.
Can you recommend a budget suitable stand enough sturdy to carry this heavy weight?
What is the recommended height for the stands?

Thanks again for your patience.

Best regards.

Dear Naass,

Our official accessories can be found from our accessories catalogue, but of course there are also hundreds of "other" stands to choose. It would be impossible for me to recommend one particular model. Google is your best friend here.

There is no exact rule for the stand height, but you should take care that the speaker is aimed at the listeners ears. So for example if the stand doesn't allow any tilt, the stand should be so high that the speaker's acoustic axis is at listener's ear level. If the stand allows tilt, then you can position the speaker slightly higher and tilt it down.
