Curse of the sub

Hi Chaps,

Need some advice on monitor purchase.

- Must perform at low(ish) end well, I write drum and bass music, c30hz+

I have A/B'ed the 8030s and 8040s but have not been able to try the 8050s in my local dealer as they don't have them on display. The 8040s on their own sound good, but bit worried they won't perform at the low end for what I want. The shop is a difficult listening environment. If i'm honest I was actually surprised how much "bass" the 8030s produced for such a tiny package, but they won't do the job on their own.

The chap in the shop is suggesting go for the 8030s with a 7050 sub. My problem is that I don't really like or trust subs. Again I can't try it because their display 7050 is broken. It may just be a bad HT experience in the past but subs never quite crack it for me. They always feel a bit disconnected from the main program and you are never quite sure they are adjusted correctly.

So I have been looking online at the 8050s as i believe with there lower end of 38Hz they will do the complete job, but have the following concerns:

- Not been able to actually listen to them since I can't find a dealer with them on display in my area
- If they prove to not have enough low end then I'll already have sunk my entire budget and won't have anything left for a sub anyway. Also the recommended sub for these speakers is the 7070 which is out of my budget.
- Will they simply be to big for the volumes of listening at 1-2m. E.g. do they need to be cranked up to be accurate?

Clearly anything will be a step up from my hs89s but this is a one time chance to get it right for a number of years..

Thanks in advance.

My opinion: go for the 8050s if you are into drum and bass music. The 8050s do have this very low end that even the 8040s don't have at all. You probably won't feel the need for a sub with the 8050s.

Apart from that: You could just order them in an internet shop. If you don't like them after all you can send them back and get your money back...

Agreed, I'm getting them ordered in for a demo to the local dealer.

Since this is going to take a week, would still be interested to hear from anyone who is using 8050a's without a sub.
