Hum

I have just purchased a pair of new 8020Bs and they are connected to my iMac. They are connected using the headphone 3.5mm socket. The lead is a 3.5mm to 1/4" jack and then into XLR adapters. I have removed the earth in the speaker plugs to eradicate earth loop. However there is still an unacceptable hum when no sound is being played which is also audible during more gentle pieces of music. What can I do to remove the hum?

Thank you, Mark.

Hello Mark,

First, when you say you have removed the earth in the speaker plugs, do you mean the audio signal XLR connectors or the mains voltage connector? I'm hoping it's the first one. :)

It’s possible that the hum would be less if the computer power supply is unplugged from the mains. Often the presence of a computer supply on the same mains circuit can induce a buzz. If this indeed helps, then perhaps a power conditioner of similar might be a solution. But this is for a buzz, not a hum.

You can try to find out if the noise is the same in different rooms (checking the mains supplies), or if the hum disappears if the inputs to the 8020Bs are disconnected or connected to a different source (checking the computer’s signal quality). If so, try reducing the volume setting on the 8020Bs and turning up the computer’s output.

Lastly short the input connectors of the 8020Bs with no source connected (last check for the speaker itself).

Please let me know the results.

Ilkka - Hi

I tried a 'Clean Box' to remove earth loop, but that didn't work.

I have now solved the problem having bought a USB Audio Interface. Running the audio out of the 3.5mm headphone socket was the mistake.

Thank you,

Mark
