Hello Everyone

A year ago I moved from Europe to Uruguay in South America and for my new studio here I bought a pair of 8040A's, which for 15 months (since purchase) have worked perfectly.

A few days ago I was changing a few cables around in the studio (although I didn't move the speaker at all, only unplugged and replugged the cables) and a problem started in one of the speakers........

The sound from the speaker went very strange and lost all its bass and sounded very 'middly', although sound was coming out of the main speaker and not just the tweeter.

I changed the cables and everything started working again ok. Then it went strange again so I changed cables again and it was ok, then it went strange again and then totally OK for a few days and now its Intermittent.

Also, since the problem started, now, when it occurs, they is also a weird 'mid' slow paced rumbling (quiet) coming out of the problem speaker. At present, having ruled cables out of the equation, I can 'solve' (most times) the problem by turning up the monitor output on my soundcard until it appears to 'blast away' the problem and normal 'full' sound returns, until of course it occurs again, anything between one hour (or less) or in the last case a few days.

Does anyone have any idea what can be causing the problem ?? Power Surge ?? Not enough power (Uruguay is 230v) although why now, all of a sudden and why not a constant problem ??). Too near to my Mac Pro tower (again none of this has changed, so logically I'm guessing its just a broken speaker ?)

Also what options I have to get it replaced (bearing in mind I'm in Uruguay !) and couriers are going to cost a lot of money due to its weight.

Any and all help / advice is much appreciated !

Hi Mark,

As a first test I would recommend confirming that the fault component truly is the speaker. Please physically switch the left and right speaker, and connect the cables again. Does the problem move along with the speaker or not?

just changed them over and within 10 mins the problem re occured in the same speaker (which is now on the left) so its definitely the speaker.

I've ordered a new 8040 from the US because I cant really be without them for work and this will arrive on Friday (plus the normal 60% Uruguay import duty - Nice !!!), but obviously I want to get this one repaired / replaced ASAP so that I'll have a spare for the future.

How can I do this and avoid crazy courier fees etc ??

Also, any idea what the problem is ??

FYI the serial number is PM71 09925. I emailed all of this to Anne Tissari over a week ago, having spoken to her on the phone but as yet, I have not had a reply !

ps - just occurred again and rather than 'blast it away' I tried pushing the first 8 dip switches up and down and this also solved it for now !

It is clear now that the speaker needs professional service. I would suggest that you first contact the place where you bought the speakers (in Europe). They are your first source when it comes to a service case. Let me know what they say and we'll continue from there. As we don't have a distributor in Uruguay makes things a bit more complicated.

I just spoke with her and she said that unfortunately she hasn't received your email. She had also tried to send you an SMS via phone to tell you this. But in any case I have been in contact with our service department, so they are well aware of your situation.
