I would like to know what is the sensitivity (n dB SPL / 1W @ 1m) of the 8040A monitor. I mean, considering the maxium output level, can I find the sensibility using the following formula (assuming that 8040As are bi amplified monitors 90/90W):

sensitivity = max dB SPL + 10*log(1/180) = (max - 22) dB SPL / 1W @ 1m

I suppose this calculation is a bit too simple! Moreover, what is the maximum output level to be considered (see picture)

Thanks for your post. The sensitivity rating (Watts / Meter) is used to specify drive units sensitivity or passive loudspeaker audio efficiency. The test is made by feeding one Watt of power, and an SPL reading is taken at 1 m for either the drive unit or the loudspeaker unit.

Now, your 8040A are active monitors with 2 power amplifiers driving a single transducer each. The monitor system is specified with a certain SPL. Each driver is selected according to a number of various parameters and then the power amplifier is designed to go with that specific driver. The drive unit sensitivity is only one small parameter of the full design. The power amplifier design can balance the possible lower sensitivity of a drive unit, etc....

In an active design we have the control on many different parameters (many more than in a passive design) and hence also great design freedom. Here, the end result is the most important one, the final SPL spec of the system. We do not publish the sensitivity of the single drive units we use. This info is not relevant in an active design, as you miss many other parts of the design that can significantly change the final SPL result.

Concerning the various SPL mentioned in our technical documentations, here are some further insights:

> Short term sine wave (100 Hz - 3 kHz):
This sine wave is basically short enough not to trigger the long-term protection circuit.

> Long term RMS (IEC weighted noise):
It is a standard pink noise signal which is filtered with an IEC 268-1 filter.

> Peak output per pair:
The SPL is measured with real musical signal. Maybe for you the most realistic signal, as it is using music.

now I understand the importance of using a dedicated power amplifier for each transducer.
