Thank you for all the years of Community discussions and activity!

The time has come for us to retire the community forums, but we will keep everything available for reading. There is a lot of valuable content written over the years, and you'll be able to access all of that. However, no new posts can be written, or old posts modified.

Alternatively, if you wish to engage in a community discussion with other people, there are many active forums available. There is also an active, fan managed GENELEC COMMUNITY in Facebook, and many Genelec employees are active in the discussions there.

We are sorry for any possible inconvenience this may cause you, but we hope to hear from you through the other channels mentioned above.

Distorsion from source, harmful for speakers?

Might be a stupid question, but I'm so worried to brake my speakers and just wanted to be sure if, distorsion from a source, e.x a laptop might harm my Genelec speakers? I can sometimes when my PC uses lots of resources hear some distorsion in the speakers. I am sure it's the laptop causing these clicks, buzzes and so on because, if I'm not doing anything else like browsing internetpages but only playing music it's distorsion free. And when using any music production software and there's lots of things happening these distorsions occurs again, due to soundcard I think (Creative Xmod USB) Hopefully my music will perform better and distorsion free when I get my Cambridge Audio DacMagic. But until then, I just want to be sure I'm not braking my speakers.

Hello,

Audio source distorsion will not harm the speaker. It is only unpleasant to your ears! However, if you play such signals at a very high level the speakers protection cicuitry will be activated and this will limit the input voltage so that your speakers do not get damaged. This functionality will occur with all types of audio signals and is only related to the input level as such.

Best regards
