hi

i have some 1038s that i use in my home studio but my ears are not in line with the wave guide and i have to keep standing up so my ears are in line with them.

if i turn them upside down the wave guide would be in line with my ears but would i need to take out the amp packs to use them like this?

i don't want to turn them upside down and find the amp pack falls out when hammering them.

Thanks for your post and question. You have indeed correctly observed that the acoustic axis of your 1038's should be directed towards the listening position and around ear height. This is valid in both vertical and horizontal orientations. For the precise location of the 1038 acoustic axis, please consult the Operating manual under: http://www.genelec.com/documents/opmans/OM1037c38b.pdf

From a purely mechanical standpoint you could perfectly use your 1038 upside down. The amplifier will hold in place, no problem there. If you do so, please note that the tweeter should not be close to large reflective surfaces, such as a table, as it will degrade the 1038's performance.

However, turning the loudspeaker upside down may not be necessary. You mention that your loudspeakers are a bit too high, and although we have little infos about your equipment installation, it may be possible to:

1) keep the loudspeakers vertical and tilt them forward so that the acoustical axis focuses towards your ears. This is a very common solution.

2) Alternatively, you could perfectly also use your 1038 horizontally and rotate the DCW waveguide so that HF driver stays above midrange driver. Then you need to decide, according to your room installation, if you place the bass drivers to the inside of the stereo setup (bass drivers are close to each other and provide increased mutual coupling) or to the outside. In all cases, remember that the left and right monitors need to be orientated in the horizontal plane also towards the listening position so that the acoustic axis focuses to your ears in that plane too. What was said about large reflecting surfaces above is also valid for the midrange driver radiation.

As the DCW waveguide is of square shape, it is very easy to rotate it and place the drivers in the correct position. If you rotate the DCW, please note the presence of a gasket between the DCW and the enclosure. This gasket must be properly re-installed to ensure air-tight enclosure performance.

Thanks a lot for all precious information you bring to us allmost 7 years ago. It help a lot to understand how changes can affect our monitors.
But can you tell us more in details if the 1038 (or whatever the genelec models is) is upside down sonicaly and acousticaly? What can be the major change drasticaly to the listener in therm of sensation and frequencys?

Hi,

Please look at the attached graph. It shows the horizontal and vertical directivity for 1237A and 1238A (also same for 1037 and 1038) models. You can notice that the directivity is perfectly mirrored in horizontal plane and close to perfect in vertical plane. This means that it doesn't make any difference to directivity and therefore also sound quality whether the speaker is placed upside down or normally. Of course the acoustical axis should be identical in both cases.
