8350APM Sudden Hiss

Youngling Viestejä: 1 Liittymispäivä: 9.9.2017 Viimeisimmät viestit

Hello all,

I purchased my two 8350APM monitors back in August. They are set up on my desk roughly 1/2 meter away from my chair with the tweeters ear level. Just yesterday I powered them on and started hearing hiss out of each sitting in my chair. I can't recall hearing it before. I unplugged each of them from the GLM unit and my Avid Omni interface so just the power cable was plugged in and both still emitted this slight hiss. Is this a problem? Are there any suggestions to resolve the hiss?

Best,

Kyle Von Strype

(please note the image attached is from day 1 and my desk has been cleaned further.)

The hiss is normal. You dont hear it when something is playing though + youll get used to it.  Maybe move them to 1m, 1/2m is pretty close.

Hi!

The level setting that is stored to the speakers by GLM also can change slightly the level of the noise generated by the speaker in idle. Have you changed your level settings in GLM and stored them to the speakers?

Best Regards, Markus

Oh, good to know. So at 0db the noice/hiss is potentially loudest? ( as you say in idle )

Ive noticed that for example the 8351 have a louder idlehiss then the bigger models 1237,1238.. (I guess its because of the physical size of the monitor and the "compromises" you have to make in smaller monitors with the electronics etc)

Thanks Markus!

Hi,

First of all I recommend you to increase the listening distance to a min of 1 m for your model, because according to https://www.genelec.com/sites/default/files/media/Studio%20monitors/Catalogues/genelec_monitors_in-room_performance.pdf

''When the distance to the monitor is too short, summing of sound from multiple drivers is not happening as designed, and this affects the flatness of the frequency response. A flatter and more stable frequency response is obtained at a larger distance''

For a better result you should take account of the acoustical axis that is not with tweeters at the ears level, is 290mm from the base.

According to the 8350 operating manual the self generated noise level in free space at 1 m on axis (A-weighted) is ≤ 5 dB that is pretty low.

I presume that at 1 m for two monitors is lower then 20 dBA. What is the noise level in your room ?

''Oh, good to know. So at 0db the noice/hiss is potentially loudest? ( as you say in idle )''

As I see from the picture below, if used in stand alone mode the loudest hiss will be if you select the +6 dB.

Hi,

Actually that is incorrect. +6 dBu is the lowest input gain setting which will yeild in lowest possible noise level.
