PLEASE HELP NEW GLM USER (DSP series mixed with classic 8020Bs)

Youngling Viestejä: 2 Liittymispäivä: 7.2.2018 Viimeisimmät viestit

Hello all, this is my first post, but Ihave been a Genelec customer already since 2010 with my 3 x 8030A and 4 x 8020Bs 7.1 home theatre setup in a separate room. So now I have purchased 3 x 8341s and 1 x 7380 sub and the GLM system obviously to calibrate my speakers with the room acoustics. My home theatre processor is the Yamaha CX-A5100 and it has the YPAO room calibration that I have used until now. My new system will be a 7.1.4 setup with 3x 8341s as the front stage and then the rest of the surround speakers will be all 8020Bs x 8 and my new 7380 sub. I will most likely be receiving my 7380 and the GLM package this week and the "Ones" later in MArch, so my question is that how should I calibrate  my system to get the most out of it with only having 4 dsp speakers and 8 classic spealers? Should I first use the YAMAHA YPAO calibration to calibrate the whole system and then run the GLM for the 4 DSP models or how?

Congrats on your new speakers and sub, the 7380 is a beast.

I don't know the Yamaha and what you can and can't do, what i do with the systems i design and commision is calibrate the the 3 fronts and sub via GLM... You have to make a call on how you plan on bass managing the system, and how you are going to cable the system.

The key thing to understand is that you only apply Bass Management and EQ once... So if you BM and EQ the 3 fronts and sub via GLM, then you don't do it via the SSP (surround sound processor)

If you cable to each speaker directly from the amplifier i would apply BM in the processor, if you run the LCR throught the Sub, i would do the BM in GLM. So if direct, the LCR's would be set to small in the SSP, if BM via GLM, LCR set to large in the SSP...

I would start by calibrating the 3 fronts and sub via GLM, it will be important then in your SSP to leave the levels and distance settings in your SSP for these speakers as all the same, so let's say 3.0 meters for example and level 0dB.. as GLM has fine tuned the levels and distances.

One this is done, you can use an SPL meter to calibrate the rear and sides levels...

Note some SSP's invert the phase of the subwoofer output, so always have a listen once finished, you'll want to play a test tone at the x-over frequency eg 80Hz through the system and turn off all speakers other than the one you autophased the sub to and the sub, measure the SPL then invert the phase by 180 degrees and see which is the louder... the louder will be the correct setting...

Thanks!! Your suggestion makes sence for the most part except how should I calibrate the 8 x 8020Bs? Also as I do not have my GLM handy yet I do not know whether one can use that as a SPL meter or do I need to purchase it separately and if which one should I get that does the job but is as cheap as possible? I probably will be updating the 8 x8020Bs at some point to DSP units but with my current update I just have already spent way too much money compared to my initial budget, so the calssic models will have to do the job for now.

I have used my iPad in calibrating the SPL. I am using an audio interface and a proper microphone + stand, but I think the inbuilt microphone will also do. SPL apps are available for many models of phones/tablets. I am using the AudioTools app.

I don’t claim this to be the best or most accurate way but it has worked for me.

I would not worry about eq'ing the speakers using your SSP, it will probably do more damage than good. As they are being used for surround duties i would set them as small so they are being crossed over in the SSP Your phone wont work very well for accurate SPL readings, but GLM will give you an on screen level dialog, so i'd just leave the mic in the main listening position and adjust the levels via your SSP, whilst scrolling through all the speakers level adjustments.

I would probably turn the power off to the L, R and Sub, then using the GLM reading for the SPL of the centre, make all the surrounds the same value...  This would form my baseline setup. I would then turn all speakers back on and listen to a few movies and music titles, and tweak the levels of the surrounds to suit your taste, but i would think of all the surrounds as 1 global setting.. so adjust them all up or down the same value. Then lastly i would tweak the subwoofer level... all these tweaks are in the SSP menus.
