Anyone running stereo with 2 subs?

Padawan Viestejä: 50 Liittymispäivä: 2.3.2018 Viimeisimmät viestit
I'm very much curious about your experience. Relate to any of these questions, or whatever pops in your mind.

1) What's your take, is it flatter and better than only one sub?

2) Did you run the GLM to associated each sub with a monitor? Does it give a more balanced imaging than mere21 sub?

3) If it's ttooloud/boom, s it possible to control the SPL through the GLM, or can I use the rotary dialt?

My setup is 8431 x 2 + 7360 x 1

Thanks for anyone kind enough to respond!

i have 8351s

had a sub here for testing, didn't like it at all.

well, hiphop & techno got a bit better, classical so much worse.

these speakers have such stellar imaging that a sub can do harm.

if i did subs, i'd do two with the sub behind or very close to main speakers.

don't understand 3rd question. GLM + GLM volume controller is great.

Thanks for sharing!

You make a very good point about the sub placement. The best results are when it's very close to a monitor. And as you wisely argue, such topology calls for a second sub, since the LF distribution feels off balanced; the lows emanate only from one side of the streao. The theory says location makes no difference with  LF since it's none-direction, but I feel the uneveness … Which is the reason I’ve just placed an order a second 7360 cheeky

I don't find the sub to affect the imaging at all; it's more of a smooth and fat reproduction of anything under 85Hz. In fact, it adds to the mix all those low frequencies our monitors are unable to reproduce. BTW, with the GLM, you can set the crossover to 50Hz, so your monitors still handle most of the sub bass.

I'm not a bass-head, but the moment I incorporated the 7360, the sound was much richer and enjoyable. Moreover, one can hear the entire musical gamut the artist had in mind. And granted, as you point out, the genre has a lot to do with it.

As for my 3rd question, I wonder how to independently reduce the volume (SPL) on the sub. There's a rotary dial at the back, but does it override the GLM settings? Or there’s a way to do it within the software?

ah, regarding 3rd  question.

GLM overrides the sub rotary thingie.

one way to go would be to lower the bass with a shelving EQ.

Thanks amigo, you are correct about the method to manipulate the SPL. See point (2)

Since 2nd 7360 has arrived and been hooked up, here are some tidbits for posterity’s sake:

  1. The new sub is a sea change: imaging is spot on; the LF vibrations now attack concurrently from either side. Truly delicious. I placed the subs very close to the monitors to create a full out stereo layout. Recommended J

  1. The subwoofer SPL can indeed be set from within the GLM. After calibration and phasing, click on the subwoofer to access its parameters screen. Search for a field named “Level (DB)”.  Increase or decrease to your liking. Personally, I’m not a bass-head and knocking it down by 7db landed me in my sweet spot.

cool bananas.

i think i should try my 8351s with 2x 7350.

Say, is the crossover frequency between subs and mains is freely adjustable? between 150 and 50?

How does it feel to place a a 8341 directly on the belly of a sub?

Let me start with your 2nd question: the crossover frequency can be freely adjusted from 50Hz to 100hz. As part of the phasing process, each sub is associated with a monitor and after the dust settles induvial tweaking is available through the parameter screens. One of my subs is against a well, the other by a pillar, and the GLM did an excellent EQ job.

As for your first question, I shamelessly placed the monitors on top of the subs with the help of a prop. I’m a bit concern about the vibration, but I’m brushing it off since it’s a temporary arrangement; I have two custom stands on order—a shelf with 4 legs, under which the sub will slide in; the monitor will be placed on top. I’ll upload some images when I have it set up.

As far as the sound goes, unintentionally, I’ve created a four-way, and oh boy does it shine! The entire frequency range emanates from the same two spots, to deliver a sublime aural experience. Despite the pressing calls of life, I find myself spending over 2 hours a day listening. It’s truly mesmerizing. For the record, if this experience didn’t come out brilliantly I would sell the sub/s without hesitation. Occasionally, I test equipment on my coin, and I willingly take a lose if it doesn’t meet my expectations—“the cost of pleasure.” Those two subs are here to stay…

wow, sounds very tempting.

2*8341+2*7360 are your setup right?

That's the same price as 2*8260

Hmmm....
