8331 monitors with a 7261 sub?

Youngling Posts: 6 Join Date: 11/28/17 Recent Posts

I'm currently using the SE system with 8130 monitors and the 7261 sub. I'd like to upgrade the main monitors to 8331s and keep the sub. Will the sub work with these newer monitors and provide proper calibration via GLM3?

Sure, will work.

can we talk you into bigger 8351s rather than 8331?

I'd recently read elsewhere that that sub wouldn't work with the 83xx series but I hope you're right because I already own it so twould be a waste to sell it for a loss.

In my space (12' x 12'), especially with a sub, there's no advantage to the 8351, not enough to justify the cost difference.

Hi there!

I'm sorry for late reply. 7261A can be used with 8331A but with some limitiations. The calibration and system should be used as below:

1. Calibrate the 8331A without the 7261A connected to GLM.
2. Unplug the ethernet cables from 8331A, and connect 7261A to GLM.
3. Calibrate the 7261A subwoofer
4. Control the volume of the whole system with 7261A connected only. Do not use 7261A and 8331A on the GLM network at the same time.

7261A was designed to be used with 8130A only, but it is possible to use with the 8331A with this trick.

Thank you! That makes sense, and it's nice knowing that there's a work-around.

Since posting this, I recalibrated my room and, for whatever reason, the new profile (I used GLM3 whereas before I'd used V2) sounds much better. More detail, greater separation between instruments, flatter response. It made the upgrade to the 8331s feel less necessary. Not entirely unnecessary, as I'm sure the newer monitors are an improvement, but things sound better for now.
