Distortion with Turntable to 5040b Sub and 8020d Monitors

Hi, I've recently upgraded my system to a Project Essential II turntable and 5040b subwoofer and 8020d monitors, but I'm getting distortion and can't figure out why. I've tried it with a Phono Box E mm which should match the TT, but still comes out distorted. I've got a feeling it's a problem with the preamp but don't want to buy one until I understand the issue. I'm quite new to a lot of this so I'm sure I'm just missing something. Any advice would be great, cheers!

What is the preamp that you use? What do you mean about distortion? What is the stylus used in the TT, mm or mc? I guess that the phono stage is the one mentioned by you above.
