1030A comparable to 8040? And what about installation close to the wall?

1030A comparable to 8040? And what about installation close to the wall?

Hello everybody!

I've worked with the 1030A for many years, unfortunately they are no longer available to me. Now I'm thinking about the direct successor: 8040. Can the sound be compared, or are there worlds in between?

In addition, the 8040 would have to be directly on the wall. I hesitate because these have the bass reflex port on the back. Do you have experience with installation close to the wall?

I have 8330 close to a wall and it's okay.
8040 is a bit cleaner and less warm than 1030, same Genelec sound though.
8341 would be quite an improovement if you sit close to your speakers, amazing imaging.

Hi lukestar,

thank you for your reply. How close to the wall are your 8330? I'd have to put the 8030 really close to the wall. Max 5 cm away. I wonder if I will hear the bass port.

What is your opinion?

The mentioned 8330's are SAM/GLM monitors and optimizing does wonders even in bad rooms... Actually, why look at just the "direct replacement"? 8330's are smaller, but when calibrated they tend to go as low and are almost as loud - most certainly an option worth looking at. The price difference is very small, GLM is well worth it.

I just recently replaced my good old 1030A's - after 25 years of great service - with the 8331's and man o man, what an improvement. My speakers are close to the wall as well (30cm) and they sound great especially after GLM.

Hi Guys,

I now found a pair of 1030A in the interweb and I paid 700€. I sent them to AudioPro in Heilbronn (the guys who repair and maintain for Genelec in Germany exclusivly).
After 20 years it has to be wiped through once. I keep you updated.

No matter what speakers someone is using, the combination of monitors with sub is the most versatile. One could place the sub close to walls and the monitors away from them, keeping a symmetry in relation to the room. Genelec describes excellent what one should do about it in this guide: https://www.genelec.com/monitor-placement
