Hello,
I have a pair of M040s (manufacture date September 2013 I believe) that have been very good to me thus far, and to which I've been very good to as well – they've never been driven hard, dropped, abused, etc.
That being said, I recently had one monitor suddenly die on me. I'm not exactly sure if it happened before or during playback – I was listening to a mono recording when I noticed something not quite right, and the monitors were both behind my back at the time, so I didn't notice right away, but I'm fairly certain it happened during playback, and not prior to.
Apart from no sound coming out of one monitor, the front LED light also doesn't come on, so it seems to me like a power issue, and not an issue with the speakers themselves. I had a careful look inside, and didn't notice any typical burnt smells or anything burnt on the electrical board, including the soldered-on fuse. I haven't had a chance to test with a multimeter yet, but from what I've gathered on this forum, and not just concering this model of Genelec, the culprit most likely is either a bad fuse and/or a bad toroidal transformer.
I of course tried changing power cables, etc. but to no avail. The other monitor works perfectly fine with the "broken" monitor's cable, in the same electrical socket it was plugged into when it died.
For what it's worth, unless I'm away from home for a longer period of time, I usually leave them swtiched "on", and have the ISS function put them in standby mode when there's no signal coming from my interface (an RME Babyface).
Also, I wasn't doing anything funky with the electricity in my apartment at the time. The only thing I did during playback was plug in my wife's laptop into another electrical socket in the same room, which I doubt would've caused a short, let alone one strong enough to take out a monitor!
It's admittedly quite dissapointing, considering how delicate I am with these monitors – it seems strange to me for one to just die out of nowhere under what to me are very normal circumstances.
Any thoughts on what to do, or what the problem could be? I cringe at the though of having to ship one of these to get fixed – not just with regards to cost, but to being damaged during transport...
Thanks in advance!
