Recommendation on upgrade path from 8010A

Hi, I am a mixing novice with a very humble apartment studio. Currently have a pair of 8010s situated about 5cm from the sides of a computer monitor and 15-20cm from the wall behind the desk. Unfortunately I cannot avoid having one wall 3 meters to the right side and another only 1 meter to the left side of the desk. I tune my low end using Sony MDR-7520 headphones.

I am trying to decide whether to upgrade the 8010s to 8020s in the near future, or to wait a bit longer and eventually upgrade to a pair of M030 in several months.

I read on this forum that the bump up in overall sound quality from the 8010s to the higher models is more than just added bass extension. But I am also well aware of my poor room setup and would likely see diminishing returns sooner than those with better rooms. I'd really appreciate any advice.

Hi,

Typically users find one step in model size/numbers noticeable but not like a day and night difference. Of course your mileage may vary and I always recommend to visit your local dealer to have a proper demo, it is after all you who makes the final decision. 8010s are amazing for their size and apart from the bass extension, they compete quite well with the 8020s. I would look at the 8030s or M030s if I were you. :)

Thanks very much for the reply. I agree that the 8010s are fantastic, and the only reason I was considering an upgrade is because I haven't done much traveling with the 8010s as I thought I might, so I can afford not to have the portability.

So I guess I will pass on an offer I saw for the 8020s and save up for the M030s instead. You're definitely right about demoing, but unfortunately, there are limited opportunities where I live. Thanks again for the help!
