ISS: 8351 not going in standby mode
Youngling Posts: 5 Join Date: 12/19/15 Recent PostsI have the following problem with my 8351A´s, I´m not able to get them into standby mode. After 10 minutes without music playback they shut off for a brief moment (status lights go off) and then instantly reactivate a moment later. It seems to me that while toggling to standby mode there is some noise (ground loop maybe?) present that is interpreted as a valid music signal and reactivates the speakers. Strangely this noise doesn´t appear to be present all the time because the speaker tries to go into standby but instantly reactivates. My setup is like this:
Naim Unitiqute2 PreAmp/Streamer Pre-Outs (Cinch) -> Cinch to XLR cable from Cordial -> 8351A analogue in
I chose this over the pure digital setup because I want to control the volume over my PreAmp.
Some more observations:
If i disconnect the signal cables the speakers toggle properly into standby mode. If I reconnect the cable for the left channel after the left speaker went into standby (no music playing) the speaker instantly reactivates. If I reconnect the cable for the right channel after the right speaker went into standby the speaker stays in standby mode.
I´m puzzled, is there a way to get this to work with this unbalanced (cinch) to balanced (xlr) analogue setup? Do I have to switch to a purely digital setup? Would this lead to the same problems (it would be also an unbalanced (BNC) to balanced (XLR AES/EBU) connection) ? The digital setup would look like this:
Naim Digital Out (BNC) -> BNC to AES/EBU XLR converter -> 8351A digital in
Hope someone can help me to get this to work.
Best regards Chris

Jedi Master Posts: 340 Join Date: 4/6/09 Recent Postsyou could try a passive balancer, we use a product from ARX which accepts RCA in and outputs transformer isolated XLR. I asume other brands are available in your area.

I'd strongly recommend that you at least try AES, from both a sound quality and ease of use perspective. Genelec have a wireless remote control available as an option for GLM2, you don't need GLM running, you just need to have the network adapter powered up via USB...

Re: ISS: 8351 not going in standby mode
Youngling Posts: 5 Join Date: 12/19/15 Recent Poststhanks for your suggestion, I´ll try the digital approach then. I found a BNC to AES/EBU adaptor cable with galvanic isolation that completly seperates the grounding from the sender and the receiver (also in the shielding of the cable), maybe this is the answer.
For the quality and ease of use perspective I´m not too sure about this. Somehow I see the digital setup (at least for my personal use case) as a less favorable solution.
As I see it, the ease of use is by far better with the analogue input. What could be more convenient than using the preamp (and native streamer apps) for the volume control? With digital in (and digital volume control) the GLM Kit has to be always active, this would only be useful if the GLM 2 network interface could be hooked directly to the home network, so you could configure the speakers conveniently from everywhere in the house and you didn´t have to plug your computer directly over usb into the Interface to access the speaker configuration. But this is not possible. By the way it would be awesome to see a Genelec Smartphone/Tablet App in the future that connects over the home network to the GLM Network Interface to control the volume and make configuration changes more convenient.
I also don´t think there is a noticeable quality gap between the different inputs because they both have their advantages and disadvantages. For analogue input there is one additional D/A - A/D transformation, true, but you have to consider the Genelec signal processing is superb. You also have to remind yourself that also the digital input signals are tranformed internally to meet the demands of the chassis, for the mids and base everything is converted to 24bit/48kHz and for the highs to 24bit/96kHz. I bet the 8351 already take these "target" sample-/bitrates into consideration when doing the initial A/D transformation for the analogue input. There was also already another thread about decreased quality when using digital volume control, it is true but should not be a noticeable issue like the other points mentioned. So even if the sound from different inputs really noticeable differs, it probably is so marginal it boils down to personal taste which input is preferred by the listener.
Best regards Chris

Jedi Master Posts: 340 Join Date: 4/6/09 Recent Postsin regards to Digital volume control, i believe that the internet is responsible for demonising it.
One of the other brands we distribute is Bricasti, when they introduced their M1 DAC, there was no digital volume control even though the hardware and chips supported it, Bricasti were firmly in the analog volume control camp. Interestingly, they have now changed to using and recommending Digital Volume Control.
Both options have pros and cons, but somehow it is only the cons of digital and pros of analog that are discussed, and as with anything else in life, it comes down to design, engineering, implementation and cost choices, but digital volume control has a lot to offer...
Just to clarify, with Genelec's new network adapter for GLM 2, it doesn't need to be powered from a computer, you can store your settings to the speakers, close down GLM, disconnect the network interface from the computer then power it from a wall USB adapter like a phone charger etc... the wired and wireless volume controls will work this way or with GLM running.
Anyway, have fun comparing and making a decision, i'm away on holidays until the 18th January, so i wont be able to participate again until then...
