GLM volume control questions

... do the Control work digital before or after Processing or analog at the poweramplifiers?
So, do the Volumecontrol control the amplifiers directly or only put a Volume information to the digital signal.
I am thinking about conecting a Networkplayer direktly to the digital input without any preamp.
So is there a quality loss at 44.1/16 or 192/24 when i control the Volume? Is it the same when i use
the GLM software on my Mac.

Hi,

Volume controls work exactly the same as you would adjust volume through the GLM. There is no perceivable quality loss.

Thank you Ilkka that sounds good, but does it work on the analog or the digital side....?

Naturally it works on digital domain, just before the DA conversion.

Hallo Ilkka,
i hope i am not annoying you. I know, that you don't want to tell too much of Internals.

But if the Volume Controll is on the digital side, you have possible no loss if you upsample a 44,1/16Bit signal to 24Bit in best case with dithering. So you have a headroom of 8 Bit to lower the Volume about 42db. This will implicate, that every incoming digital Signal will be upsampled.
With highres files for example 192/24Bit you will have a loss of information of 1 Bit for 6db. Or do you upsample higher at 32Bit.

I know, this is possibly a more academically question, i don't know if i can hear a Bit left. But if you want to build a highres system it is necessary to know whats going on. So it is possibly better to use analog input with one more da/ad processing then use the digital input for highres.

Hi Joerg,

There are no digital or analog sides, it's just one signal path. Analogue signals are just digitalised right after the input. Volume control works the same no matter what kind of signal you will input.

... but on the analog side before the input i can do the Volume Control lossless analog before it is (re)digitalized
in the loudspeaker...

Gruss Jörg
P.S.: If you dont want to tell, in wich way you do the Volume Contol and if it is realy lossless, please say it and
i don't post to this question again.

Yes, of course you can use an external analog volume control. :)

I moved your questions into separate topic because they are no more directly relating to GLM 2.0. :)

An analog volume controller will offer you 100% lossless attenuation but at the same time you will introduce many other problems such as uneven channel balance at different levels of attenuation. In my opinion this is greatly inferior compared to GLM digital volume control.
