Newbie at the verge of his first Hi-Fi purchase

Dear Genelec Community & Monitors (pun intended),

After years of living on a budget and listening to music through my trust-worthy headphones I am finally in a situation where I am going to make the leap to my first Hi-Fi set-up. Being born and bread in Finland means Genelec is an obvious choice.

However, given my inexperience in the area I find myself with more questions than answers when thinking of my first purchase. Add to that conflicting advice from dealers and what you end up is one confused customer.

My situation/issue is the following: I have decided on purchasing either a pair of G-series speakers with a view to expanding to a 2.1 set-up in time, or then go straight to a 2.1 set-up from the word go.

My living-room (aka listening space) is a typical Finnish new-build apartment living-room: square, approx. 5x6 meters with listening distance at about 3-4 meters. I will mainly be playing music through my computer (to which I am considering getting an external sound card), although I do hope to connect my turntable to my set-up as well. I mainly listen to R&B, Hip-Hop, Jazz as well as Electronic Music.

My questions therefore are:

1. Would a 2.1 system consisting of two G1s and a F1 prove quickly to be too small a set-up?
2. Would a pair of G3s trump the above set-up especially in terms of bass (I am particularly fond of the double-bass & drum combination on such songs as Erikah Badu's 'Rim Shot (Intro)' )?
3. Does my thinking make any sense? I obviously still have a budget, but my thinking is that people on a budget cannot afford to buy cheap.

Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

Wishing you the best of summers,

Paavo K

Hi Paavo,

1. Based on the room size and listening distance, I would not recommend a system consisting of G1s and F1. Those are best suited for desktop use where the listening distance is under 2 meters.
2. An F1 will provide more bass extension than a pair of G3s but that is mostly noticeable during action movie playback. I listened the song you mentioned and I can say with a great confidence that it will sound great through G3s. :)
3. I would start with a pair a G3s and think about the subwoofer (F2 model) later, should you still need the extra bass extension.

Dear Ilkka,

Tuhannet kiitokset!

That pretty much confirms my thoughts exactly (including your suggestion for the F2 later on). Thank you for expert and kind advice.

Wishing you all the best in the midst of this heatwave :D
