M040 with ISS: External power switch possible?

Youngling Posts: 4 Join Date: 4/7/14 Recent Posts
Hello!

Last December I bought two M040. They are powered through a system with an external main power switch for all of my home studio gear (so their individual power switches are always set to "on"). In February the first monitor stopped working - no LED, no sound - and had to be sent to the repair center. Now the the second monitor "does" the same thing (no LED, no sound...) and has to be repaired too.

Is this just bad luck or might there be something about the ISS-System (in the sense that I must not use an external power switch for speakers with ISS)? I'm not complaining here, I just would like to know what to do in order to NOT have the same problem on and on...

Thanks in advance & kind regards, Hobbit

Hi,

We have recently improved both M series models when it comes to resisting any disturbance coming through the mains power. Using an external power switch is one occasion where these kind of problems may occur more easily. We recommend that both of your speakers should be updated in order to have trouble free operation especially if you wish to continue to use an external power switch. Of course this update is free of charge during the warranty period.

May I ask which country do you live so that we can notify our local distributor there?

Hello

Thank you for your kind answer! I live in Switzerland. I bought the monitors from "Musik Produktiv Schweiz" (www.musik-produktiv.ch), which in fact is the Swiss "arm" of a German company. The monitors were sent to me from Germany and that's also where I had to return the first monitor for repair. So my "local" distributor would probably be in Germany, no? Although it would be easier to have the update done in Switzerland ;-)

Again thanks a lot & kind regards,
Hobbit

Sorry for missing your reply. Have you already been in contact with Audio Export which is our distributor for both Germany and Switzerland? What is the situation now?

I actually was in contact with Audio Export in Germany (since one monitor needs to be repaired and therefore sent to the distributor in Germany). They knew that a change had been announced by the manufacturer (which means you...), but according to their knowledge only for the M030. I was told to send both monitors to Musik Produktiv in Germany (where they must have arrived just today) who will forward them to Audio Export Germany.

Kind regards, Hobbit

Hi,

it is true that the improvement was originally announced only for the M030, but since then we have notified our distributors to include also M040 models.

I got my M040 back from Audio Export Germany. They had replaced the main circuit boards in both monitors (as recommended by Genelec), so now they work again and should be less sensitive to sudden peaks. As announced by Ilkaa Rissanen here on the forum the update was free of charge. In addition the contact with Audio Export Germany was very pleasing: All my questions were answered within no time and in a very friendly and helpful way. Great service!

Many thanks + kind regards, Hobbit
